JANUARY

1940 Rain froze as it hit the ground. Birds could not fly because their wings were stuck to their bodies. Their feet were frozen to the ground.

FEBRUARY

1963 It was so cold the River Thames in London froze.

1891 A great snowstorm covered the whole of England.

APRIL

1974 11 football players were struck by lightning during a match in Wales.

1975 A whirlwind picked up a factory and moved it 9 metres.

2003 Record July temperatures 30°C plus.

AUGUST

1952 After very heavy rain 93 houses were destroyed and 34 people were killed by floods at Lynmouth in Devon.

1976 A hose pipe ban.

1990 Record temperature recorded in Cheltenham 37.1°C (99.8°F) plus.

2003 Record temperature recorded in Gravesend, Kent 101°F.

SEPTEMBER

1958 In Sussex hailstones weighted about 6 ounces and were the size of a grapefruit.

OCTOBER

1987 One of the worst storms ever hit Southern England. Winds reached 100 mph.

NOVEMBER

1970 The warmest ever November day - 22°C.

DECEMBER

1970 A white Christmas – it snowed on Christmas Day.

1981 On 11 days in December the temperature was below -10°C.
