Comprehension

2) Read this story:

We do not know much about St Nicholas. We do know he was born in the 4th century AD in an area which today is part of Turkey. He later became an Archbishop. There are many stories about him. One says he was on his way to an important church meeting when he stayed overnight at the inn.

The inn keeper (a nasty, evil man) had just murdered three young boys. He cut them up, salted the parts and was going to sell them as meat for pies. He kept the parts in a barrel. When St Nicholas was told this he made the sign of the cross - † - over the barrel and the three boys came back to life.

After St Nicholas' death people held a special feast day each year to thank him for his goodness. This took place on the eve of 6 December.

Sometimes people dressed up as St Nicholas and left presents for children who had been good!

Now answer these questions:

1. In which century was St Nicholas born?

2. What was his job?

3. Who murdered the three boys?

4. Why were they murdered?

5. How did St Nicholas bring them back to life?

6. What happened on the eve of 6 December?

7. Do you think the story is true?

8. Can you see any links between the story of St Nicholas and the story of Christmas?

9. Write a limerick about St Nicholas, starting with the line:
