Introduction

Easter is a Christian festival celebrated close to the beginning of Spring. If you celebrate Easter you may wish to encourage children to link their design to this. If you are studying Romans you may wish to link the idea of mosaic designs to this, perhaps incorporating some Roman style patterns. The egg design reflects a springtime theme as well as Christian symbolism.

Although children are provided with a basic template of an 'egg' outline, there is a large design element to this project.

The children will need to decide on the following:

What to make - they may choose to make a picture/wall hanging or a tile. Again, the latter may fit well with a study of the Romans. For a picture/wall hanging you may wish children to use card as a base, or even fabric. For a tile, stiff card is probably best, although a large (approximately 20cm x 20cm) tile might be an alternative.

What decorative patterns to use - some suggestions are provided for particular mosaic patterns. These do not have to be used. Children will have ideas of their own and could also be encouraged to seek other ideas from books and/or the Internet.

Background design - the children will need to decide on the background pattern for their egg design. This may affect the orientation of their picture, so they will also need to decide if their project will be 'landscape' or 'portrait' before they begin. Their project can then be made on a square or rectangular shaped base as appropriate.

Materials to be used - ideally, a wide range of materials should be available from which they can choose those most appropriate to their design.

Activity Preparation

You Can Make pupil instructions plus templates for making a springtime mosaic picture are provided here.

These can be printed off and then photocopied. Depending on the age/ability of the children, these could be used individually or worked through with an adult. Each child should be given a copy of these instructions even if an adult is working with them. They can be given as complete A4 sheets or cut up into individual activity cards. One purpose of this task is to help children to develop the ability to work from a set of instructions.
