  You Can Make: Springtime Train
 

What You Need:

For train & carriage:

Mache
boxes -
rectangular
& oval -
(1 of each)

Mache box lids - rectangular (2)

Acrylic paint
- red, green, yellow, blue & purple

Wooden wheels
- large (3)
& small (8)

Buttons -
½ inch (4)

Fab foam - red, yellow and black

Picture
hanging eyes

Chain

Thin wire
(optional)

PVA glue

Paint brush

For items in
the carriage (optional):

Mini wooden
flower pots

Mini wooden
eggs

Acrylic paint
- red, yellow,
blue & purple

Petite flowers

Plasticine /
blue-tack

Springtime Train & Carriage
     
     
    How To Make
         
   

To get started:

1. Paint some parts before you start making:

Mache boxes and lids - green
1 Large wooden wheel - yellow
Wooden wheels (2 large + 8 small) - red
Wooden birch buttons - yellow

Leave to dry. Paint again. Leave to dry.

2. Cut some parts out of foam using the template:

Train Body, Train Front & Train Back - red
Train Roof - yellow
Train Funnel - black

   
   

TrainTo make the train:

3. Glue rectangular box, open side down, on top of a lid with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

4. Glue two sets of wheels, on either side of train, at base using PVA glue. Stick large wheel first, followed by small wheels. Leave to dry.

5. Make an arch over top of train box with 'Train Body' shape. Glue each end of arch to sides of box with PVA glue.

6. Make an arch at one end of the box with 'Train Roof' shape. Glue each end in place with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

7. Stick 'Train Front' shape onto the front of train with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

8. Stick 'Train Back' shape onto the back of train, to cover the gap, with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

9. Glue two buttons to front of train with PVA glue. Leave to dry. These are buffers.

10. Glue yellow wheel to front of train with PVA glue. This is the engine front. Leave to dry.

11. Cut small circle from red foam and stick onto yellow wheel with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

12. Make slit in top of train body and insert 'Train Funnel'.

   
    CarriageTo make the carriage:

13. Glue oval box, open side up on top of second lid with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

14. Glue wheels on to carriage, with PVA glue. Leave to dry.

15. Glue two buttons to back of carriage with PVA glue. Leave to dry. These are buffers.

 
 
To join train and carriage:

N.B. Adult help is essential for this part.

16. Pierce hole in back edge of train and front edge of carriage.

17. Stick small picture hanging eye into each hole. Glue in place at back with PVA.

18. Link train and carriage using small piece of chain. (Open links of chain and bend around picture hanging eye or use small piece of thin wire to fix chain to picture hanging eyes instead.

 
 
To make the flower pots or decorated eggs (optional):

For the flower pots:

19. Paint mini wooden flowerpots (inside and out) using own choice of colour. Leave to dry.

20. Push small piece of plasticine or Blue-tack in bottom of each flowerpot.

21. For each flowerpot, cut 1 flower head, with stem, from petite floral bunch.

22. Push stem into plasticine or Blue-tack in flowerpot.

For the decorated eggs:


23. Paint mini wooden eggs using own choice of colour. Leave to dry.
