Introduction

This task is designed to develop design and making skills. It is intended to take 1-2 hours and will result in children making clothes and 'dressing' a model. It is important that before any designing and making takes place that the children, as a class or in groups, discuss the weather and appropriate clothing for summer days. (Jokes about the British Summer accepted - the intention is to highlight concerns and safety in sunlight).

In designing 'dress' you may wish children to consider 'accessories' and not just obvious garments of clothing. Sunglasses might, for example, be a very good item to include.

The model may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. A template of a figure to dress is provided and this should be cut from thick card. Instructions are included for children to enable their figure to be free standing. This model could be coloured, adding facial features etc. Alternatively, you may wish to allow children to make a model figure from air-dry clay or a similar modelling material. The latter will, of course, provide a greater challenge when making clothes but could extend the skills used/taught e.g. stitching fabric.

Templates are provided to ease the making of garments, although with older/more able children you may wish to allow modifications.

The list of suggested materials is deliberately long, but not exhaustive. You may wish to add suggestions of your own. It is important, though, that you provide a wide range of materials to enable children to make their own choices and selections.

Instruction sheets for the children to use are provided below but it is expected that most children will work through them with an adult. Children should be encouraged to collect the tools and materials themselves.

It is essential that children are encouraged to cut and combine items with care and accuracy with guidance being given on how best to do this. The instructions are, necessarily, limited and it is therefore important to carefully talk through the tasks with the children. As far as possible it will be helpful if groups have children of similar abilities. This will make it easier to maintain the pace most appropriate to all group members.

Activity Preparation

You Can Make pupil instructions plus a template for making a Sun safe model are provided here.

These can be printed off and then photocopied. Each child should be given a copy of these instructions even if an adult is working with them. They can be given as complete A4 sheets or cut up into individual activity cards. One purpose of this task is to help children to develop the ability to work from a set of instructions.

Once children have selected the clothes and accessory templates they wish to use these will need to used for cutting out the materials. Help will need to be given in doing this. On some materials children should be able to draw around the templates onto the material. On others this may be difficult and help may have to be given.

Clothes and accessories may be attached to the model using tabs (as given on templates), glue or Velcro.

When each group has completed the task they could spend a few minutes looking at their own and each others. The adult working with them could assist them in thinking about the quality of each product and how this quality might be improved.

When all children have completed their models it would be beneficial to discuss them all together considering and discussing the different ways in which clothes/accessories have been decorated and on the effectiveness of the different materials used.

There is also the opportunity to reinforce the ideas about safe wear and behaviour in summer sunlight.

Positive evaluation of each others models and the suggesting of improvements should be encouraged.

Follow-up Activities

1. When the task is complete children could be encouraged to give their 'model' an identity - name, age, job etc. and then write a short story about their character.

2. Using the model template to draw another outline on paper children could design clothing for another time of year (Winter) or location (rainforest). They could then explain their choices using labels and/or additional text.
