This task is designed to develop, primarily, making skills. However, opportunities are available to modify the appearance of the finished product. You may also wish children to use this basic design to design (and possibly make) their own creature, perhaps by modifying one or more design features.
Both tasks provide opportunities for developing understanding of pattern, colour and colour combinations. There is also opportunity for children to use their design skills on the decoration of the product.
Children should be encouraged to evaluate their finished product and to suggest possible improvements.

What you need:
'You
Can Make' pupil instructions for either the weaving dragonfly or alien bug
Templates for making a weaving dragonfly or alien bug
|
| |
These can be printed off and then photocopied from the links below. It is expected that each child be given a copy of either set of these instructions. In some cases it may be appropriate for a child, or group, to work with an adult. In these circumstances it is essential that children are encouraged to work as independently as possible, using their own design ideas, selecting their own tools and materials etc. One purpose of this task is to help children to develop the ability to work from a set of instructions.
With older or more able children it is possible to encourage them to think about the size of the templates and their individual needs. They could then modify the size to better suit their requirements.
When using the template to cut the shape of the creature, the template could be paper-clipped to the card enabling children to use the ‘slit lines’ for cutting. Alternatively, children could be required to measure and mark their own lines.
SAFETY NOTE: ensure that all children are able to correctly use a craft knife and do so on a cutting mat. If some children’s control of a knife is poor this task can be used as training, but with some supervision. |
Choose from either a weaving dragonfly or alien bug. |
