Christmas Facts - Did You Know?

Christmas Card

The first Christmas card was sent in 1843.

The idea of decorating Christmas trees came from Germany about 150 years ago.

Christmas Pudding

Christmas pudding was originally a type of porridge made with plums.

Father Christmas

The pictures of Father Christmas we see today first appeared in an advert for Coca Cola.

In the First World War 1914, British and German soldiers stopped fighting and played football with each other. On Boxing Day they carried on fighting.

Christmas parties were banned in 1652. The government said people had forgotten what Christmas was really about.

Broken Piggy Bank

Boxing Day was the day when servants and apprentices broke open their money boxes. Their masters and friends put money in them as gifts.

We do not know when Jesus was born. The Romans chose
25th December because that was the time they had lots of parties
and feasts.

In France children put their shoes in front of the fire. Father Christmas - or PÈRE NOEL - puts his presents in them.

In Germany many children get their presents on 5 December, from St Nicholas.
