An Introduction to English Patchwork - A Hand Sewn Technique Over Foundation Papers

Learn how to piece a table runner, a lap or cot quilt from chosen fabrics or scraps.

We will look at hexagons, tumbling blocks and tessellations over foundation papers. We will discuss samples and completed work as well as design concepts.

The class will include drafting instructions for each shape, plus the supply of foundation papers in different sizes for your chosen shape to use on the day. There will be card for template making as well as sampling remnants and sewing thread for use in class.
This technique is non-block and suitable for beginners. Each student should bring a notebook, pencil, ruler, glue stick, tacking thread, pins, sewing needles and paper/fabric scissors to class.

I hold a City and Guilds Patchwork and Quilting Diploma. I also have a BA and MA in Textiles (weaving).

Learn how to piece a table runner, a lap or cot quilt from chosen fabrics and scraps.

We will look at variations of log cabin. Instructions will be given for technique including using foundation papers. Design concepts will be discussed, as well as samples and finished work.

The class will include the supply foundation patterns in different sizes if required. There will be card for template making as well as sampling fabric and sewing thread for use in class.

We will sew samples by hand in class, although access to a sewing machine is advised fro larger projects. This is a block technique and suitable for beginners. Each student should be bring a notebook, pencil, ruler, glue stick, tacking thread, pins, sewing needles and paper/fabric scissors to class.

Note: Foundation patterns are used in a multitude of design concepts.

An Introduction to Applique for use in Block Patchwork

Learn how to create a table runner, a lap or cot quilt from chosen fabrics or scraps.

We will look at applique using freezer paper and double-sided fusible bonding fabric. Instructions will be given for both techniques. Samples and finished work will be discussed.

I will supply simple applique patterns plus freezer paper for use on the day. There will be card for template making if required plus sampling fabric and sewing thread for use in class.

Both techniques require an iron, which I shall bring with me. I prefer to finish off applique blocks with a sewing machine; this will need to be done at home. Each student should bring a notebook, pencil, ruler, glue stick, tacking thread, pins, sewing needles and paper.fabric scissors to class. This technique is suitable for learners with some knowledge of zigzag sewing.
