Hornby Battlefront Gift Set is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Something for both Young and Old Airfix were the first company to revolutionize the toy soldier market by the introduction of the plastic one inch high soldier, which were sold in sets of between 40 and 50 figures. Indeed, the author of this review received his first set as a 5 year old back in 1959. Over the years, Airfix produced an impressive range of figures for many periods of military history, together with a large range of military vehicles and aircraft, all to the same scale, so that every schoolboy could indulge his imagination. Sadly, Airfix recently announced that they were ceasing production of both figures, and military vehicles, EXCEPT for this, and one other First World War Anniversary set. So, This set has many things going for it. Excitement and imagination for the youngster who can pit his British Paratroopers supported by the famous Sherman tank, against the German Infantry with their dreaded Tiger tank, amongst the ruins of a partially destroyed farmhouse. Whilst those older buffs like myself, who in the years between may have gravitated to other figures in metal and plastic, can re-live those nostalgic days when Saturdays were spent in the local model shop choosing what we should buy with our pocket money. I am sure that there are some who, with absolute sincerity will argue about `war toys`, but I would point out the main difference between Airfix, and the modern computer `shoot-em-up` games. With Airfix you actually started by constructing something, rather than just destroying things, and constructing that kit gave you a sense of achievement, and investment in your model that seems sadly absent in a plug-in, or downloaded video game. So, what do you get for your money? Two sets of figures, two tanks, one ruined farmhouse, and diorama base, plus paints and glue, all of which would have cost you more if bought individually, but, except for the two tanks, these items can no longer be bought separately. Given the financial climates that Companies now have to operate in, you can never tell when a product may be deleted from a catalogue, so, if you are a budding Junior General, or an Airfix `old-timer`, take this opportunity to get yourself this set, which like all the Airfix products has excellent box art to trigger that imagination. I have bought a couple and put them aside. I may make them, but I may just keep them. One day, this set may well be the one that everyone regrets not buying, and the only place you will see them will be on those auction sites, where pristine sets will be commanding very high prices. Buy it when you see it, for I have lived through those days when you didn`t see it again.
