Christmas Pocket Advent Calendar

  How To Make

1. To make a tree pattern - on a large sheet of paper, draw a triangle with 2 sides of 71cm and a bottom line measuring 54cm. On this side of the triangle add a rectangle to represent the pot of the Christmas tree. (See diagram)

2. Cut out the paper tree pattern and pin onto the green fabric and cut out two pieces. Then pin the pattern onto the wadding and cut out one piece.

3. Take the 10cm strips of assorted fabric and fold over approx 1cm on the top and bottom edges - iron in place. These will form the pockets of the advent calendar.

4. Arrange the strips of fabric so that they fit onto the triangle -starting 1cm up from the bottom of the triangle and leaving a 1cm gap between each strip of fabric. Using a basic sewing stitch setting on the machine, stitch in place.

5. Following the guidelines shown on the diagram, divide the strips to make 24 pockets.

6. Take red and green checked fabric and using the paper pattern, cut out 1 shape of the pot. Fold the top side over 1cm and iron.

7. Pin onto green base leaving the top side open and stitch in place. Continue to stitch around the outline of the tree to secure all fabric.

8. Lay 2 green tree shapes right sides together and place wadding on top. Pin through all three thicknesses, all around the edge leaving a turning of approx 1cm and an opening of 15cm along one side of the triangle. Machine stitch in place.

9. On all corners of the tree, trim fabric down to 0.5cm to allow easier and neater turning. Turn tree right side out.

10. Fold in edges of fabric on the side opening and stitch together by hand.

11. With gold ribbon tie a bow and stitch to the centre of the pot.

12. Cut 2 star shapes out of the gold lame ribbon - a template can be made from drawing around a pastry cutter or similar.

13. Sandwich a small piece of wadding between 2 stars and stitch, with wrong sides together using a simple running stitch. Attach to the top of the tree.

14. Finally, complete advent calendar by attaching numbers 1-24 onto each pocket. These can be made easily from the self adhesive felt. Now it is ready to fill with surprise Christmas goodies!
