To make the bag:

1. Cut ten 18cm lengths of opal ribbon. Lay both pieces of Vilene interfacing, adhesive side up, on the ironing board. Lay five pieces of ribbon lengthways, on each piece of interfacing so that the ribbon edges are touching.

2. Lay the greaseproof paper across the top of the ribbons and using the iron on medium heat, press the top 1cm to secure.

3. Cut twelve 15cm lengths of light orchid ribbon. Weave six lengths of ribbon across each panel of opal ribbons. Check that the ribbons are square and that all edges butt together.

4. Check both panels measure the same size. Cover with greaseproof paper and press to secure. Machine stitch around the edge of the ribbon panels to secure the ribbons.

5. Thread the needles with sewing thread and bring out between the orchid and opal ribbons at the top of the panel. Thread approximately 60 beads on to one of the threads, alternating between crystal and lilac beads.

6. Lay the threaded beads down the ribbon panel and couch between each bead until you reach the end of the panel, adding more beads if required. Secure the threads on the reverse side.

7. Couch a string of beads between the other lengthway ribbons in the same way and then couch across the ribbon panel to complete the beading. You can bead both the front and back of the bag or bead the front panel only.

8. Fit the zipper foot into the machine. With right sides together, pin the satin fabric across the top of the panel. Machine stitch right next to the top crossway ribbon. Press the seam open. Repeat on the second panel.

9. Pin the two bag panels together, matching the seams and ribbon panels. Tack the satin to mark the stitching line. Stitch around the bag panels, leaving a large gap at the bottom of the satin for turning.

10. Trim the seam allowances and across the corners and turn through. Slip stitch the gap. Press the satin around the top of the bag.

1. Thread a needle with about 1m of quilting thread. Pick up eight crystal beads and tie into a circle leaving a 15cm tail. Take the needle back through four of the beads ready to begin.

2. Pick up six beads. Take the needle through the top two beads in the previous circle and back through the next four of the circle just created.

3. Repeat step 2 until you have 38 circles in a chain. Leave the thread tail for stitching the handle on later.

4. Thread a second length of thread and go back up the chain adding a lilac bead in the centre of each crystal circle. To do this stitch through the two beads at the top and bottom of each circle so that the thread goes diagonally across the circle.

5. When you reach the top of the chain, go back down through the beads in the opposite direction to secure.

6. Stitch the bead straps to the top edge of the bag above the outside rows of couched beads. Backstitch the ends behind the beads to secure invisibly.
