  How To Make

Please note: Allow 6mm for all seams.

To make the straps:

1. Cut two 7cm wide strips from the full width of each of the three fabrics. Fold each strip in half (right side to right side), pin and sew along the long edge . Turn right side out.

Handy Tip Tip: To make turning the strips right side out easier tack a piece of piping or other cord longer than the strip of fabric inside the strip. You can then pull on this cord and the strip will turn right side out.

To make the bag:

3. Cut three squares from each of the three pieces of fabrics, approx. 16.5cm x 16.5cm.

4. Taking a 6mm seam, sew one square of each piece of fabric together to produce three rows of three squares, alternating the order in which the fabrics are joined. As shown in diagram 1. Press all seams open.

5. Then join these three strips together still taking a 6mm seam to form the front of the bag. As shown in diagram 2.

6. Repeats steps 3 to 5 for the reverse of the bag.

7. Join the front piece of the bag to the reverse along one side seam. As shown in diagram 3.

8. Cut the lining fabric to fit the whole of the inside of the bag, approx. 93cm x 48.5cm.
9. Pin the ends of the straps to the front and reverse of the bag, at the halfway point of the outer fabric squares, on the 'inside' of the bag. With right sides of fabric together, pin the lining to the bag enclosing the straps between your coloured fabric and the lining. Adjust the length of the handles as desired and trim any excess.

10. Use the trimmings or decorative cord to make the loops for the toggles and pin inside the seam in the same way as the straps, positioning the loops at or near the joins of the outer and centre squares. Once you are happy with the positioning sew across the top seam enclosing the straps and loops as you go. Turn right side out and press the seam.

11. With right sides of fabric together, sew the remaining side and bottom seams. Neaten and turn inside the bag.

12. Sew toggles to the outside of the bag to finish.
