Black Cat Drawing Project

  How To Make

Step 1: Trace the outline and main features of the Cat using a well sharpened 2B pencil, and 90gsm tracing paper onto 220gsm smooth surface cartridge paper. Hold all the sheets down with masking tape.

You should end up with a sketch that looks similar to this one:

Step 2: Use a B pencil to apply the first layer of shading, leaving the areas that will become the highlights unshaded. Keep the pencil strokes flowing to match the direction and length of the fur.

Step 3: Use a 2B pencil to darken the first layer of shading and a B pencil to lightly go over the areas that were previously left unshaded. Continue to work in the direction of the fur.

You should end up with a picture that looks similar to this one:

Step 4: The next layer is the darkest so use a 3B pencil, keeping it as sharp as possible, to draw in the fine dark fur. Add shading and detail to the dustbin lid and a little shading to represent the pupil of the eye. Use a very sharp F pencil to add fur texture to the lighter highlighted areas. Clean around the drawing with a vinyl eraser, then use an F pencil again to go round the edge of the cat with very short strokes to soften the outline, also add the whiskers.

You should end up with a picture that looks similar to this one:

Step 5: Once complete your drawing should look similar to the main picture at the top of this page. To finish, spray your drawing with a fixative to prevent it from smudging.
