Head/body:
- Using yellow wool with 4mm hook and working in treble throughout.
- Make 3 ch and slst into 1st ch to form a ring.
- 1st round – 3ch (this will count as 1st tr) 7tr into ring. Slst to top of ch to complete round. (8st). DO NOT TURN.
- 2nd round – 3ch 1tr into base of ch, then work 2tr into each st to end, slst to complete round. (16 st).
- 3rd round – treble, slst to complete round.
- 4th round – treble 2 tog 8 times, slst to complete round. (8 st). This forms the neck.

- 6th round – (2tr into next st, 1tr into next st) to end. Slst to complete round. (24 st).
- 7th and 8th rounds – treble, slst to complete round.
- 9th round – (1tr, treble 2tog) to end. (16 st).

Beak:
- Using orange wool with 2.5mm hook and working in dc throughout. Make 3 ch.
- 1st row – dc into 2nd and 3rd chain. (2st). Turn.
- 2nd row – 2dc in to 1st st and 1dc into next st (3st). Turn.
- Work three more rows on these 3 stitches.
- 6th row – dc 3 tog (1st). Fasten off, leaving a few inches of wool to use for sewing beak in place.
To make up:
- Roll a small piece of filling into a ball and push through the neck of the chick into the head.
- Thread long end of wool left on beak along edge to centre. Fold beak in half and attach to centre front of head OR sew felt beak in place.
- Eyes can then either be made by sewing a few stitches in black wool above the beak, or by using glue to attach felt or stick-on eyes in place.
Nest:
This can be made to any size, using any brown textured wool and a hook of suitable size.
- Make 5 ch and slst to 1st ch to make a ring.
- Using tr throughout and 3ch as first tr on each round – work 10tr into ring and slst to complete round.
- 2nd round – (2tr into next tr, 1tr) all round. Slst to top of 3ch to complete round.
- 3rd round – (2tr into next tr, 2tr), all round. Slst to complete.
- 4th round – (2tr into next tr, 3tr), all round. Slst to complete. Continue in the same way until you reach the required size for nest, then work a few rounds in tr without increasing for sides of nest.
- Last round - work in tr and tr2tog a few times evenly round the nest (this brings the top in slightly and gives a better finish. Fasten off and sew in loose end.
