Brilliant for simple alterations
Bought this book to learn how to shorten a waistcoat. The book included how to make waistcoats slimmer and shirts/ jackets shorter at the bottom hem so was perfect for this. There are many diagrams and the steps are easy to follow: it is well explained.
Contents of book includes altering:
- skirts
- dresses
- trousers
- jackets
- shirts
- coats
- ties, bow tie and waist coats
This book is suitable for beginner and intermediate sewers. I have done a dozen shortening and slimming alterations before so would say I fall into this category.
The book states that it isn’t a complete set of all alterations but mentions the most common ones you will use.
It would be even better if the book showed how to reduce garments at the shoulder rather than the bottom hem.

really useful basic introduction
this book has a good selection of basic alterations instructions. not a comprehensive range, but useful nonetheless. Clearly set out and a reasonable price - worth checking out if you want to alter charity shop buys, or are short so need to constantly adjust hems etc. Would have liked a few more examples of how to adjust shaping of garments, but overall a good product.

This book is great for beginner and experienced sewers. I am a beginner and have learnt loads from this book and was one I wanted to read from start to finish instead of dipping in and out of it.

Learn to restyle your wardrobe …
Having watched “Great British Sewing Bee” I’ve always marvelled at some of the alteration challenges … this book shows you, how to achieve a new wardrobe by altering garments you may already have (or can purchase cheaply from a charity shop). The language used is easy to understand as every step is explained step by step.

Great for beginners
Lots of useful information about fabrics, ranging from heaviness to difficulty to use, different types of stitches, including different alterations for skirts, dresses, shirts, trousers, jackets, coats and capes, and accessories like ties and waistcoats. Useful diagrams and detailed instructions, including texts.

Really handy book!
This is such a used reference book, covering and refreshing some of the basics which is handy for a new sewer like me!
Fairly in depth on the topics for altering pretty much any garment, and if it’s not quite clear enough it helps you know what to look for for more help.
All in all very happy with this
