Watercolour Painting

Watercolour is attractive because of its portability - all you need is a paint box, brush and paper. Watercolour gives equisite effects of depth, texture and light which is achieved through delicate washes. Landscapes are the easiest subject for beginners to paint.
 
 
What You Need:
• Palette of 12 watercolours in different colours
• 4 main brushes for: washes and glazes; edges and straight lines; large surface coverage; fine detail and thin lines.
• Watercolour paper
• Pencil and eraser for sketching an outline
• Board or hard surface to support your paper
• Masking tape to secure paper to hard surface
• Water pot
• Flat plastic palette to mix colour

Oil Painting

Oil paints have a firm texture, offer great variety and technique and strong depth of colour. It is also one of the most forgiving mediums - the paint can be easily manipulated and wiped off. You can paint on paper, stretched canvas, canvas board, wooden furniture and walls.
 
 
What You Need:
• Palette of 12 different oil colours
• 4 main brushes for: large areas of colour and narrow lines; blending and manipulating; dabbing on small patches of colour; fine detail and highlighting.
• Paper or canvas, or other surface
• Palette and palette knife to mix paint
• Charcoal to draw an outline drawing
• Easel
• Solvents e.g. white spirit to thin oil colour and clean brushes
• Jam jar for holding solvents

Silk Painting

Silk paints can be used to create projects such as greetings cards, pictures, clothing, soft furnishings and more. When the silk paint comes into contact with silk it spreads to create interesting effects. Use outliner to create a design which will keep the oil paint in a paticular area of your design.
 
 

What You Need:
• Silk paints
• Brushes with a thick base to hold the colour and
a fine point for more detailed work.
• Outliner to create your design
• Wooden frame or embroidery hoop to hold the silk above your work surface
• Silk paint palette
• Cotton buds
• Iron and cotton cloth to fix the colours

Glass Painting

Great ideas for glass painting include greetings cards, wine glasses, mirrors, vases, mobiles, suncatchers, votives, and more. There are two types of glass paint waterbased and non-waterbased. Both have a good range of colours but waterbased take longer to dry.
 
 
What You Need:
• Glass or glass item
• Glass paints

• Outliners - either glass paint outline stickers, glass paint outliner in a tube or leading tape.
• Paint palette
• Paint brush
• Sponge - good for covering large areas and blending colours while wet
