How to make

Using your iPad, log on to your Design Space™ account and make sure you are connected to your Cricut machine. If using a Cricut Explore Air 2 make sure the Smart Dial is set to ‘Custom Materials’.

Open a new project, then select the ‘Text’ button from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, and choose a font from the list – we chose ‘Chloe’.

Type the name into the text box.

With the name selected, open the ‘Actions’ menu at the bottom of the screen and select ‘Ungroup’.

Re-position the letters closer together one at a time so that they become joined. If you’re using the same font as we have you’ll find that some letters don’t join as well as others, simply leave these detached.

Once happy with the letter positioning, drag a selection box over the entire name and click ‘Weld’ from the ‘Actions’ menu.

Measure the area where you are wanting the name to sit on the box. With the name selected open the ‘Edit’ menu and change the width measurement ensuring that the padlock icon is locked.

Select the ‘Text’ function once more, this time selecting a different font, we used ‘Favorite Fonts Collection’.

Type ‘Welcome to the World’ in the text box that appears on screen.

Resize the greeting using the arrow symbol which appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the selection box when the greeting is clicked on. Position centrally underneath the name.

Repeat steps eight to ten to create the remainder of the phrase, positioning centrally under the rest of the text.

Drag a selection box over the entire message and, select ‘Attach’ from the ‘Actions’ menu.

With the message selected, open the layers menu and click on the right pointing arrow.

Change the colour of the text to match (as closely as possible) the vinyl you are intending to use.

Open the ‘Shapes’ menu located in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and select a star to add to the canvas.

Open the ‘Layers’ menu and change the colour of the star to a similar vinyl colour that you’re intending to use. Insert two more stars and change the colours of these also, we used three different star vinyl colours in total.

Re-size and rotate the stars using the arrows in the top and bottom right-hand corners.

Centrally layer a smaller star on top of a larger one. Drag a selection box over the stars and select the ‘Slice’ function from the ‘Actions’ menu.

Open the ‘Layers’ menu and delete the top two sliced images by clicking on the bin icon at the bottom of the layers menu.

Add as many stars as you like around the central message.
Top Tip: The stars will appear on your mats clustered together rather than in the arrangement you’ve created on your’re canvas, this helps to save on vinyl. Use the layout you have created on the canvas as a guide when it comes to adding everything to the wooden box lid.

Once happy with the layout of everything, select ‘Make it’ from the bottom right-hand corner. You will then be taken through to the mat preview screen, check that everything is as it should be then click on the ‘Continue’ button in the bottom right-hand corner.

Once through to the cut screen, click ‘Browse Materials’ and type ‘vinyl’ into the search bar and select ‘Premium Vinyl – removable’ from the search results. Follow the on-screen instructions to cut out the designs.

Once cut, carefully weed the design using the BrightPad and weeding tools. Use transfer tape to apply the message centrally to the lid of the box. Then add the stars individually using the project created on the Design Space canvas as a guide.
