Using a laptop/Mac/iPad/iPhone/Android device, log on to your Design Space™ account and make sure you are connected to your Cricut Explore™ / Maker™ machine. On the home screen type ‘Advent Village’ into the search bar and select the below project, and the ‘customise’ option.
Your canvas will then populate with all 25 items for your advent. The elements that make up each item will be grouped together, making it easier to re-size each piece as desired. For our advent village we amended each item to remove a few of the elements, however it is completely up to you what you want to include.
To amend any of the items, simply click on it to select, and then move into a free space on the canvas so that it can be worked on freely. Select ‘Ungroup’ from the ‘Actions’ menu located in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and open up the ‘Layers’ tab. Select any elements you would like to remove and select the eye icon, located at the bottom of the layers tab.
Some elements that include score lines, such as roof and wall panels will be attached. Move the elements into their own space on the canvas, select the elements and then click ‘Detach’ from the ‘Actions’ menu in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. It is important that the elements are not moved to avoid the score line being added back in the wrong place.
For elements that include a score line, sections will need to be hidden using the ‘Hide Contour’ tool, located in the ‘Actions’ menu at the bottom of the screen. A pop-up box will then appear on your screen, to hide an element, simply click on it, the element will then turn a light grey. If the section you’ve removed includes a score line, make sure this is also removed.
Once complete, drag a selection box over the element and the score line and select ‘Attach’ from the ‘Actions’ menu.
Once happy with the size and design of the item, it’s time to amend the colour of the different elements to correspond with the coloured/patterned cardstock you would like to use; this will make it much easier to identify and remember what elements need to be cut from which material. To amend the colour, select the element, and with the ‘Layers’ tab open, click on the arrow to the right of the element.
Select a corresponding colour to the cardstock you want the element to be cut from.
Once you are 100% happy with everything, position each of the elements so that they are clustered together once more, drag a selection box over all of the elements and select ‘Group’ from the ‘Actions’ menu. continue working in this way for each of the remaining 24 items.
After all of the advent items have been amended to how you want them, select ‘Make it’ from the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
You’ll then be taken through to the mats section, double-check everything is as it should be, before clicking on the ‘Continue’ button in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
It’s then onto the cutting! Adjust your smart dial accordingly if you are using a Cricut Explore Air 2, or select your material from the menu if using a Cricut Maker. Use the scraper tool to apply your material to the cutting mat to ensure good contact, then follow the on-screen instructions to cut out your designs.
Carefully remove all of the cut pieces from the cutting mat and layout in groups using the canvas images as a reference. Start to construct each of the pieces using double-sided tape, and a glue pen from more intricate sections.
Once each of the 25 structures is complete, it’s time to create your advent village! Mantle pieces and sideboards work best, so that everything can be displayed without it all being too close together. To ensure all of the pieces are displayed in pride of place we’ve used logs to create height, however you could also use books. Add a sprinkling of snow to complete the scene.
