How to Make 3D Unicorn Wall Art

Difficulty Intermediate
Budget £10 - £30
Time 1 hr +

Create a magical focal point with this 3D unicorn wall art, perfect for any children’s room, play room, or creative workspace! All the images are easily assembled as they are numbered during the cutting process using the Cricut Explore Air™ / Air 2™ / Maker™ and the online software, Design Space™.

Please note:

This project uses one of the Ready-to-Make projects in Design Space™, which can be resized as desired then saved to your Design Space™ account. The colourful tissue paper mane is an extra feature added to the project; easily cut using the Cricut Maker™ and rotary blade. If using the Explore machine, the tissue paper must be cut with scissors.

The term ‘Cricut Explore’ refers to all the Explore machines: Explore™, Explore Air™, Explore Air 2™ and Explore One™.

Step 2

Resize the image as desired: this project creates a finished size approximately 26.7cm / 10.5” high.

Step 3

If using the Cricut Maker: add a square and resize it to be approximately 16.5cm / 6” wide x 1.5cm / 0.5” high. Duplicate this to create a total of five rectangles. These will be cut from tissue paper.

Use the XL applicator tool to apply the cardstock to the standard grip cutting mat to ensure good contact.

Step 4

Cut the unicorn images from cardstock and glitter cardstock as prompted, inserting the scoring stylus and pen as instructed on screen and selecting the appropriate materials setting for each resource.

Use an older light grip cutting mat to ease the removal of the images and apply the tissue paper to the mat using the brayer. If using an Explore™ machine, cut thin tissue paper rectangles using scissors.

Step 5

If using the Cricut Maker™, cut the rectangles from various colours of tissue paper, applying the resource to a light grip cutting mat.

Step 6

Remove the cut cardstock images from the cutting mat using the spatula. Remove the tissue paper rectangles using the mat remover tool.

NOTE: the tissue paper will naturally curl as it is removed from the cutting mat, adding to the mane effect.

Step 7

Use the scraper tool to fold and crease the images, as appropriate.

Step 8

Lay out the unicorn pieces in order 1 to 17 and follow the unicorn assembly instructions and video to assemble the unicorn head; accessed through the project screen:

We trimmed the forelock after the unicorn was cut out to allow for a fuller mane, however you can leave this attached if you prefer.

Step 9

Use a hot glue gun to attach the head to the back panel to make it more durable.

Step- 10

To complete, decorate the unicorn with the tissue paper pieces to create a colourful mane, gluing them into place.
