These home-made scented soaps would make a lovely gift and are easier to create than you might think. These ones are lavender and thyme, but you could also make soaps using dried rose petals, lemon and mint, or poppy seeds for an exfoliating version.

You will also need:

Garden herbs, such as lavender, cotton lavender and thyme

Jug (suitable for microwave)

Lavender essential oil (optional)

Step-1

Collect bunches of garden herbs (ask an adult first!) You will need about two cups' worth. Pull apart into small pieces, removing any woody bits.

Step-2

Chop the soap into 1in (2.5cm) sized chunks and place into a jug. Put in the microwave and heat in 30-second blasts until the soap has melted. Add a few drops of essential oil and stir in, if using.

Step-3

Sprinkle the herbs into the cake tin and gently pour the soap on top. Leave to set for at least two hours.

Step-4

Use a palette knife to loosen the edge of the soap from the tin then pop it out. If there are bubble marks on the top, rinse the giant soap in warm water and rub the surface with your fingers until smooth.

Step-5

Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes from the soap. Avoid waste by keeping the shapes as close together as possible. Wrap the soap in baking paper with a stick of lavender on top for the perfect gift.
