Step-1
Tension: 1 granny square= 7×7 cm Finished size: to fit 0-6 months. Length= 24cm (top of bib to bottom of shorts) Width= 21 cm (widest part of shorts) Pattern begins by making 12 Granny Squares and then works the top 'bib' part of romper, followed by the bottom.
Step-2
One Granny Square; make 12: Using yarn A, 4 ch, join to 1st ch with a ss to form loop, 3 ch (counts as 1st tr now and throughout), 2 tr into loop, 3 ch, (3tr, 3 ch) into loop 3 times, join to top of beg 3 ch with ss. Fasten off Join yarn B to any corner space (sp) (chain 3, 2 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch) all into same corner sp, *(3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch) all in next corner sp rep from * twice more, ss to top of beg 3 ch to join. Fasten off
Step-3
Join yarn C to any corner sp, (chain 3, 2 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch) all into same corner sp, (3 tr, 1 ch) in next sp, *(3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch) all into next corner sp, (3tr, 1 ch) in next sp, rep from * twice more. Fasten off. Sew in ends. Using yarn C and tapestry needle, join squares in 6×2 formation, rs together using mattress seam. Then join two short edges together using the same seam, rs together. This forms a continuous tubular shape that forms the main part of the shorts. Sew in ends.
Step-4
With rs facing, place the shorts so that you have 2×2 full squares and 2 half squares facing (see pic) this will become the front/back. Using yarn C, with rs facing join to any sp in 'top' of shorts, (ch 3, 2tr, 1 ch) into first sp, (3 tr, 1 ch) into every sp and corner sp to end. Join to top of beg 3 ch with ss, (24 x 3 tr clusters) or (96 sts total)
Step-5
Continuing with yarn C, 1 ch (counts as 1st dc now and throughout), dc into every st to end, join to beg 1 ch with ss. (96 dc) Fasten off. Rep last round with yarn B, (96 dc) Fasten off. With front facing, join yarn B to dc stitch that is directly above central top-left granny square seam, ch 1 and dc along to dc stitch that is directly above central top-right granny square seam. (30 dc), this forms the start of the 'bib' part of romper, *ch 2, (counts as 1st htr now and throughout) htr to end, rep from * until bib measures 10 cm. fasten off
Step-6
Bib edging – front facing, using yarn B, join to the dc stitch to the bottom-left side of bib, 1 ch, 17 dc around left edge to corner, (1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc) all into left top corner, 28 dc along top, (1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc) all into right top corner, 17 dc along right edge to bottom corner. ss into corner. Fasten off.
Step-7
Bottom edging & shorts: Using yarn C, with rs facing join to any sp in 'bottom' of shorts, (3 ch, 2tr, 1 ch) into first sp, (3 tr, 1 ch) into every sp and corner sp to end. Join to top of beg 3 ch with ss, (24 x 3 tr clusters) or (96 sts total) Fasten off.
Step-8
With yarn A, join to any st, 1 ch, dc around to end, join to beg 1 ch with ss. Fasten off. Divide for legs: RS facing, and continuing with yarn A, find central dc on front and back from the last round, join yarn through both front and back dc stitches together. Working around right-leg first, *1 ch, dc around to end, ss to beg 1 ch, rep from * twice more. Fasten off. Repeat for left-leg.
Step-9
Straps: Right strap: With back facing find dc st (on last round worked on this side) that is directly above the seam of the central top-right granny square. Join yarn B, 2 ch, 4htr, turn and cont on these 5 stitches in htr until strap measures 23 cm (or desired length). Buttonhole row: 2 ch, 1 htr, 1 ch, miss 1, 2 htr. Work one more row for strap (htr into all sts and 1 ch). Fasten off. Rep for left strap, joining yarn to the dc above central top-left granny square seam.
Step-10
Sew in ends and sew on buttons.
