Abbreviations

Beg – beginning

Ch – chain

Ch-sp  chain space

Dc – double crochet

Htr – Half treble crochet

St(s) – stitch(es)

Ss – Slip Stitch

St-sp – Stitch Space; space between individual crochet stitches

Tr – treble crochet

Special Stitches

SP-2 – spike stitch over 2 rows: spike stitch is an elongated crochet stitch. For SP-2, instead of inserting your hook directly into the row below, yarn over and insert the hook into the 2nd row below (so this is into the centre treble of the 3tr group), then complete as a standard treble stitch.

Crab stitch – dc from left to right instead of right to left (and vice versa for LH crocheters).

Pattern Notes

To create a strong and denser fabric, this bag is made by crocheting into the spaces between stitches using a smaller hook than recommended for the yarn.

If you would like to use a larger hook to make a less dense fabric try using 8mm or 9mm hook.

Step-1

Snowflake hexagon motif (make 15): Using 7mm hook and Yarn A, make a magic loop. Round 1 (RS): Ch3 (counts as 1tr here and throughout), 2tr into the loop, ch2, (3tr, ch2) 5 times into the loop. Tighten loop, ss to top of beginning ch3 to join and fasten off.

Step-2

After Round 1, you have 6 groups of 3tr and 6 ch2 sps. Round 2: Join Yarn B to any ch-2 sp, ch3, (2tr, ch2, 3tr) in same ch-2 sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in each of the next 5 ch-2 sps, ss to top of beginning ch3 to join and fasten off. After Round 2, you have 6 groups of (3tr, ch2, 3tr).

Step-3

Round 3: Join Yarn C to any ch-2 sp, ch1 (counts as 1dc), (1dc, ch2, 2dc) in same ch-2 sp, 1tr in each of next 2 st-sps, SP-2, 1tr in each of next 2 st-sps, *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch-2 sp, 1tr in each of next 2 st-sps, SP-2, 1tr in each of next 2 st-sps; rep from * to end ss to top of beginning ch3 to join and fasten off. After Round 3, you have 6 corners of (2dc, ch2, 2dc) with 4tr and 1SP-2 along each side. Weave in ends and block/steam block each motif.

Step-4

Making up: This stocking is made in one piece and then folded and joined to create the stocking shape.

Step-5

With WS facing, using Yarn C and either ss or by sewing with yarn needle and invisible seam, join your 15 snowflake motif hexies into rows as below:

Step-6

Hexie G is the heel of your stocking. Fold your work, covering hexie G with hexie K as below. Insert 2 stitch markers through ch-2 sp of hexies N and H to secure.

Step-7

Fold hexie D to cover hexie F. Insert stitch markers into ch-2 spaces to secure.

Step-8

Fold hexie C in half and again join with stitch markers to secure.

Step-9

Fold hexie I in half and join with stitch markers through ch-2 space to secure. Finally add stitch markers through each ch-2 space of hexie J to secure and form toe.

Step-10

Turn work inside out (WS facing). With Yarn C and either by ss or using yarn needle and invisible join, join all open seams.

Step-11

Once all seams are joined, turn back RS facing.

Step-12

Edging: Round 1 (RS): Join Yarn C to any ch-2 sp, ch2 (counts as 1 htr), 1htr in same ch-2 sp, 1htr in next 18 st-sps, *2htr in next ch-2 sp, 1htr in next 18 st-sps; rep from * once more, ss to top of beginning ch2 to join. 60 sts. Round 2: Ss in next st-sp, ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in same st-sp, 1htr in each of next 19 st-sps, *2htr in next st-sp, 1htr in next 19 st-sps; rep from * once more, ss to top of beginning ch2 to join. 63 sts.

Step-13

Round 3: Ss in next st-sp, ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in same st-sp, 1htr in each of next 20 st-sps, *2htr in next st-sp, 1htr in next 20 st-sps; rep from * once more, ss to top of beginning ch2 to join and fasten off. 66 sts. Round 4: Join Yarn B to any st-sp, ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in each st-sp to end, ss to top of beginning ch2 to join.

Step-14

Round 5: Ss in next st-sp, ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in each st-sp to end, ss to top of beginning ch2 to join. Round 6: Ch1, crab st in each st-sp to end, ss to top of first crab st to join and fasten off.

Step-15

Weave in ends and trim. Block/steam block again if desired. Using Yarn B, make 2 large pompoms with 85mm pompom maker and 12 small pom poms with 45mm pompom maker. Trim pompoms and attach to stocking.

Step-16

Hanger: Using Yarn C, ch25. Row 1: 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. 24 sts. Fasten off. Join both ends to make a loop. Sew to top back seam of stocking.
