How To Crochet A Summer Bag

Create this laid back summer bag using our NEW Women's Institute Home Cotton yarn. With a great choice of colours you can make your own individual look.

Abbreviations

Ch – Chain

Tr – Treble

Dc- Double crochet

Ss- Slip stitch

Bobble- Work treble into next st but only half way through, leaving 2 loops on the hook, repeat this until you have 5 loops on the hook, then using yarn A draw through all loops and pull tight to create bobble.

Yarn Key:

Cream = Yarn A

Dark Pink = Yarn B

Light Blue = Yarn C

Yellow = Yarn D 

 

 

Step-1

Using yarn A and 5mm hook ch40 and turn. Row 1: ch3, work 1tr into each st (41sts) Continue to work straight in trebles for a further 9 rows. You will now work around all sides of the rectangle that you have just made.

Step-2

Round 1: Ch1, work 19dc along first short row, 41dc along cast on, 19dc along short side, 41dc along remaining side. (120sts) Round 2: Ch1, work dc into the back of each st, ss into first dc (120sts) Round 3: Ch1, work dc into each st Continue to work straight for another 7 rounds.

Step-3

Next round: Ch1,* work 3dc, work bobble in yarn B* repeat to end of the row, ss into 1st dc Work 3 rows in dc using yarn A Next round: Ch1,* work 3dc, work bobble in yarn B* repeat to end of the row, ss into 1st dc

Step-4

Continue straight until work measures 34cm from base using yarn A only. Change to yarn B, work 2sc into the next st, 1 row below where you are working, *miss 1 st, work 2sc into the next st, 1 row below where you are working* repeat to the end of the row

Step-5

Slip st rows Using yarn C work a slip st row 2 rows down from the top of the bag by inserting your hook, pull up a loop from the back of the work, insert your hook into the next st to the left, yarn over and pull through the work, then pull through the loop on your hook.

Step-6

Continue all the way around the bag until you meet the beginning. Fasten off. Work in the same way with yarn D and yarn B working 2 rows down each time.

Step-7

Strap: Using yarn A and 5mm hook ch8 Next row: Ch1, work dc into each st

Step-8

Continue straight until work measures 85cm Using yarn B work dc into each st along both sides of the strap.

Step-9

Making up: Sew in all ends. Line the centre of the back stap up with the centre of the short sides of the bag. Pin into place to make sure they are even and then sew into place.
