Step 1

Gather your thread colours, tree skirt, and equipment. Download and print the embroidery template and stick the A4 pieces together. Using a lightbox, or a window, trace the design from the template onto the tree skirt. You can do this with an erasable fabric pen or chalk pen. Add a ‘From the’ surname to personalise, do this is a sans serif style below the Merry Christmas. Trace on the stars to surround the words.

Step 2

Starting with the M of Merry Christmas, take all 6 strands of the white embroidery thread and use a size 3, 4, or 5 needle to stitch, depending on how comfortable you feel. Start by back stitching one edge of the letter and then stitch the next line as close to the first as possible. Continue until you have filled in the shape. Your stitches should create an almost brick-like pattern. Continue until you have stitched the full two words.

Step 3

For the personalised surname, take two strands of the white embroidery thread and back stitch around each letter.

Step 4

Take 3 strands of the thread and fill with a satin stitch, making sure you cover the original back stitch. This will create a slightly raised effect for the text.

Step 5

You can now move onto the stars, using a mixture of the gold and beige thread colours, use three strands and back stitch each shape.

Step 6

Once you have completed the design, carefully remove any left-over pen/chalk marks and proudly display around your tree!
