Exactly what I needed
I bought a sewing machine Singer Promise. It is my first sewing machine ever and so I was not sure what to expect. When collecting the machine in the shop I asked if someone could show me how to set it up so I can start straight away. I was so lucky that Sue, a Hobbycraft staff from Reading branch, was so helpful and spent her valuable time in a busy shop showing me - a complete beginner - how to even thread a needle! I appreciated this personal approach and can't thank her enough. She explained everything so well that I was able to start on my first sewing project later that day. I am very happy with my machine. It does exactly what it says on the tin! It was very good purchase and I would recommend it.

Good value
A good basic sewing machine at a reasonable price. Easy to use. Choice of stitches includes 3 lengths of straight stitch, 4 sizes of zig-zag, blind hem for firm and stretchy fabrics, a shell-tuck stitch, 3 point zig-zag & a decorative scallop stitch. Also has tension adjuster and reverse stitch. Very good value. Excellent for beginners as instructions are clear and a threading guide is also printed on the actual machine. It comes with some accessories such as zipper foot & button hole foot, darning plate, spools & needles. It's lightweight too so easy to carry around.

Live's up to it's name!
After about a 30 year gap I decided to take up sewing again and felt ready to step up from the mini machine I'd bought earlier in the year.I don't need anything fancy just a machine strong enough to do quilting, sew through several layers of fabric and general sewing. The Promise ticks all the boxes : easy to use, the essential choice of stitches, good accessories and its strong yet not so heavy that you can't carry it. My only quibble is with the illustrations in the instruction booklet, photographs would be better but apart from that the Promise gets 10 out of 10 from me.

Serves the function I bought it for :-)
This machine is more basic than I expected, with no dial to change the length or width of switches. It does, however, come with the accessories and the function for buttonholes and performs free motion embroidery with the use of a darning plate, although the embroidery foot is not included.
For the price, this machine is a perfect starter or in my case, a perfect addition to my equipment that performs the free motion embroidery function my other machine does not do. The manual is very clear and having read it online first, I was also able to purchase the embroidery foot needed and confirm that the machine was suitable. I am pleased with my purchase and at such a reasonable price.

Singer Promise 1408 Sewing Machine - a great buy
The Singer Promise 1408 Sewing Machine is not just an "entry" model, it has enough facilities for the majority of home use requirements. It is light enough to be able to be stored away when not needed, simple to thread and tough enough to handle thick layers of material. Change stitch types with a "click" of a knob. Apart from a few extra stitch types (that most people will never use in practice), it has all the facilities that come with a more expensive machine.
All round a great buy--I'm so pleased with mine!!

Excellent sewing machine, easy to use.
I was able to try out this sewing machine before purchasing it, and I was very impressed at how easy it was to use. I have experienced difficulty with threading before, but with this model it really is simple. I love the features on this machine which make sewing a real pleasure, the bobbin winder, the choice of stitches etc. I have had no problems with this machine, and have so far made several garments with ease.

Great replacements
Half way through a quite complicated sewing job, my 22 year old sewing machine 'died". I went straight to hobbycraft, knowing they had the replacement I wanted in stock. What was so nice and unusual, was the level of help I recieved. One member of staff carried the sewing machine down to the checkout for me and the other young lady carried it to my car for me. It is hard to describe how appreciated offered help is to a disabled person.. Both these ladies were helpful, please and engaging and won't be forgotten by me, for their kindness. Thank you ladies.

easy to use
Light but sturdy, stays put in use. Guide to show how to thread, very useful. I'm not a novice but havnt used a sewing machine for many years. I purchased this one to make altering clothing easier; &it does the trick beautifully. Instructions are clear, easy to read and understand. Pleased with this purchase.
