Get Started In Spray Paint

* Spray Paint

* Item to Paint (canvas, ornament, piece of furniture etc)

* Protective Gloves

* Sandpaper (assorted grits from 4-120)

* Protective Sheet

* Newspaper (for dabbing technique) 

* Face Mask/Respirator (essential for spray painting indoors)

* Old Clothing

Ensure the can is well shaken before use, this makes sure the spray paint inside is well mixed and helps the colours stay consistent. To allow the paint out of the can, pull off the spray nozzle and remove the black ring underneath. Then, carefully press your spray nozzle back onto the can - be careful not to press the nozzle down too hard that paint comes out.

Before spraying your desired surface, do a test spray on a scrap piece of carboard/paper – just a quick tap should do. This allows you to check the colour is correct and that the cap is functioning properly. Repeat this project every time you begin a new project.

For an even coat: Hold the can 10cm away and spray in a side-to-side motion.

To create drips: Holding the can close to the object and spraying long continuous bursts will add lots of paint and form drips.

To blend two colours: Spray whilst the previous colour is still wet.

To cover a shiny surface evenly: Holding the can 15-20cm away from an object with a shiny surface helps to prevent drips and will provide an even coverage.

For a textured effect: Once your base layer is dry, spray a small area at a closer distance (roughly 10-15cm away). Whilst it's still wet, scrunch up a small piece of newspaper and lightly dab it onto the area to reveal the colour below.

To create a paint splatter effect: Holding the can close but not touching, spray paint onto your finger (with gloves on), this will create a pool of paint on your finger. Before this paint dries, flick the paint onto the object you’re painting.

Many different surfaces can be used as a base for spray paint; canvas, wood, ceramic, concrete, metal, glass and even flexible surfaces (like plastic) can be used with the correct preparation. Sandpaper is great for getting surfaces ready for painting as well as removing unwanted textures after spraying!

Make sure all dust from sanding is removed before you move onto spray painting.

Wear a respirator/face mask and gloves when spray painting (especially if spraying inside). If you are working inside make sure all doors and windows are open to allow ventilation.

Always protect the surface you’re working on before spraying and ensure you’re in an open area far from any walls or furniture.

If you are unsure, refer to the safety information on the spray can.

Beware of the wind direction when spraying outside.

Seal your masterpiece with a matte or gloss varnish. This provides protection against oxidation and UV protection. Always wait until your piece is touch dry before applying a varnish (around 30 minutes).

Items like disposable gloves, newspaper, old brushes and masking tape can all be useful tools to add additional details and effects to your creations.
