Meet the Maker: Knit and Crochet Artist Emma Varnam
Emma Varnam has the great job of designing knitting and crochet patterns and has worked with many magazines and knitting brands. We are very lucky that she took the time to create a lovely snood for us so we thought it would be nice to get to know her more.

How did you first get into knitting?
My Grandma taught me to knit when I was about six or seven, but I really took up the hobby in my late twenties when all my friends were having babies. When I had my own son I started designing clothes and toys that I thought he would like.
What's your favourite thing to make?
I do love making toys, especially when they delight the hearts of children. I also enjoy making cowls or scarves to brighten up my outfits. You can quickly whip up something over the weekend and that will add something new and covetable to your wardrobe.
How many projects do you have at the moment?
About four or five? Is that mad? I am beginning to think about my next book so I have a few swatches and samples on the go. I always have a few small projects which I can pick up or put down ready for Christmas gifts.
What other crafts are you into?
I am best known for my crochet designs so that I where most of my imagination goes. However, I really enjoyed making felt flower headbands over the summer and endless pom-pom garlands which brought a bit of cheeky pizazz to the garden. If I had lots more time I would do more quilting and patchwork.
What's your favourite thing you have made?
My recent designs for my book Cute Crocheted Animals. Both Jack and Emily Rabbit have turned out exactly how I hoped and people who see them immediately want to give them a cuddle. Getting a physical reaction like that to something you make is the best feeling in the world.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I read a fearful amount of magazines and books. I genuinely enjoy chatting and spending time with children and often it is the little asides and comments they make that inspire me to design.
What is next for you?
I have just finished a couple of new designs for Debbie Bliss and they should be appearing in the shops soon. I will spend the winter working on new crochet designs for my new book and if I get time I expect I will make a few little stocking fillers for my son.
