Hi, I'm Amy from Hobbycraft Nottingham. I picked up acrylic paints during 2020 and they are now my primary art medium, having enjoyed drawing throughout my life. I also enjoy a range of other crafts - I consider myself a Serial Hobby Collector, and I dabble in other kinds of paints and art mediums, hand-sewing, jewellery making and whatever else looks enjoyable. I find this approach helps me a lot when completing bigger projects that involve multiple skills, such as mixed media pieces and cosplays. A lot of my artwork is on the darker side - both in terms of colour palette and themes - which reflects my personal style, through which I express my creativity. I think it is very important for crafters to keep a positive attitude even when projects don't go to plan - there is always something to be learned when mistakes occur, and at the end of the day anything you've made is something that did not exist before.

Amy’s Makes

Candle
Acrylic on canvas. A glazing technique using alternating transparent layers of colour and opaque white paint creates a dimensional "glowing" effect, suited to depicting lights such as candles within a dark environment.

Droplets on a Window
Watercolour on watercolour paper. Photo referencing is an important skill for any artist, assisting with everything from understanding forms and values to choosing your paint colours. This piece was inspired by a photograph of a fogged up window pane from social media and while the painting is not identical to the photo, using it as reference helped me create a more coherent finished piece.

Leaves on Water
Oil pastel on brown recycled paper. Oil pastels combine techniques from both painting and using colour pencils, building up thin and thick layers of pastel to create a range of tones and textures. While it is possible to create a sharper effect using a variety of techniques and equipment, the soft, almost abstract look that comes from using oil pastels alone as they come out the box lends itself to depicting natural forms.
