How to make

Step 1

* Start by preparing the glue. Sieve one cup of flour then add one cup of water and a pinch of salt then whisk until the mixture is free of any lumps.

* Tear lots and lots of strips of newspaper, it does not matter what size the strips are. Here we have used 1 inch strips.

* Roll a large piece of cardstock into a cone shape securing in place with paper tape then trim the pointed end off slightly so it is not so pointed. Place an inflated balloon into the larger end creating the base for the carrot shape.

* Dip a strip of newspaper into the glue, run the strip through your index and middle finger to wipe off any excess glue then stick the newspaper strip onto the carrot base, continue to add strips overlapping as you go until the whole base is covered.

* Set aside to completely dry this can take up to 24 hours depending on the atmosphere in your home.

Step 2
Once dry repeat step 4 adding a second layer of newspaper to the base again allowing this to dry completely. Then add a third layer, you may only need to add a third layer to the top balloon part depending on the strength of the lower part.

Step 3
Trim lengths of orange crepe paper and make cuts into it creating a fringe, paint some watered down pva glue around the bottom then start wrapping the fringe around crimping as you go.

Step 4
Continue to wrap crepe paper fringe around and around until the whole carrot is covered.
Step 5
Carefully pop the balloon and pull it out, make the hole slightly bigger using a pair of scissors. Fill the carrot with sweets then glue a disk of green cardstock over the hole and add one final layer or orange crepe paper over the top.

Step 6
Fold a sheet of green crepe paper over and over then fold in half, cut long leaf shapes into the loose end. Roll into a baton shape then secure in place by gluing a small disk of green cardstock to the uncut end. Glue this green leafy part to the top of the carrot to finish.
