How to Make a Space Helmet
Kids will love helping out with this papier mache space helmet as they can get their hands really messy with the paste. To make the helmet sturdy you do needs quite a few layers of paper mache which takes time to dry.

How to make
Blow up the balloon and wrap the piece of card around it, about half way down the balloon. Make it nice and tight and secure in place with masking tape.
Mix up the papier mache paste by mixing two parts water to one part PVA to form a paste. Tear sheets of newspaper into squares and cover the helmet in paste and paper. Leave to dry then add another layer. Repeat until your helmet is good and sturdy – it will need 3 or 4 layers.
Pop the balloon and gently remove from the helmet.
Paint the helmet silver inside and out and leave to dry. You may need a few coats to get an even coverage.
For the opening on the helmet, draw an oval 4cm from the bottom (about 20cm wide) and use a sharp pair of scissors to cut it out.
Add a trim of gold duck tape to the visor and bottom of the helmet. Cut the tape into small pieces and gradually work around the edge.
For the visor, cut a piece of acetate a little bigger than the oval hole (you can use the cut out piece as a guide). Glue inside the helmet. Finally, add some foam stars to decorate.
