Step 1

Cut two rectangles out of your chosen fabric that measure 36 x 15cm (For Medium sized bag cut 45 x 20cm). Iron interfacing to one of your rectangles. Your interfaced rectangle will become the 'outer'.

Step 2

Cut a piece of ribbon cord 10cm long.

Step 3

Lay the 'outer' rectangle and 'lining' rectangle right sides together.

Step 4

Pin the top short edge.

Sew and press seams open.

Step 6

Repeat with other end, except add the loop of ribbon into the centre before you sew. You will now have both fabric pieces joined in a loop.

Step 7

Next keeping your pieces right sides together. The 'outer' fabric should be touching 'outer' fabric and 'lining' fabric should be touching 'lining' fabric with the seam in the middle. Pin together.

Step 8

Mark a 6cm gap in the long side of the 'lining' fabric.

Step 9

Sew down the 2 long open edges, leaving your marked gap. Press seams open.

Step 10

With your bag still inside out, fold one of the corners on itself to make a triangle with the side seam running down the centre. Pin flat. Use a ruler to find a 4cm - 6cm length across (you decide how deep you want your bag) - keeping it square. Mark with a pencil or another pin.

Step 11

Sew across this line. Then repeat on the other 3 corners.

Step 12

Trim off the excess on each corner.

Step 13

Turn the whole bag the right way around through the gap in the lining side seam.

Step 14

Press and pin the gap shut.

Step 15

Sew the gap close to the edge.

Step 16

Pop the 'lining' side inside the 'outer' bag. Give it all another press.

Step 17

Fold down the top and mark where you want to put the button. Use a needle and thread to attach it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty and unique homemade gifts! Made 2 of these - one of the smaller and one of the larger. Amended the instructions so no bagging out - made inner and outer and turned over the tops with the loop when ready to sew up. Used 2oz wadding which I'd sewn in random lines to the outer. The smaller bag, using my method, was a bit fiddly with a sewing machine so I'll adjust the sizing for next time. I used embroidery thread (6 strands of 12cm) for each loop. Will make again.
