Beginner Technique - How to Make Tassels

Create a colourful tassel to coordinate with your wrapping paper to add the perfect finishing touch!

Step 1: Cut a piece of cardboard that is the same length that you wish for your tassel to be. Begin to wrap your chosen yarn around in the centre of the cardboard.

Step 2: Once you’re happy with the thickness of the wrapped yarn, cut the yarn and pass a small piece underneath the bulk and tie at the top.

Step 3: Cut the thread at the opposite end to where you have tied until the yarn is freed from the cardboard.

Step 4: To begin wrapping the band at the top of the tassel, create a long loop with a contrasting yarn that is slightly longer than the thickness that you’d like the band to be.

Step 5: Begin wrapping over the top of the loop, being sure to leave a small amount of the loop visible at the bottom.

Step 6: Once you’re happy with the coverage, trim the yarn, leaving about 10cm. Thread this end through the remaining loop at the bottom, and whilst holding this piece, pull the loose thread that appears at the top of the tassel, pulling the thread underneath the band and out to the top of the tassel.

Step 7: Trim the tassel so that it is a uniform length.

Beginners Technique - How to Make Pom Poms

Transform leftover yarn into the perfect decorative detail! It's easy to create pretty pom poms in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Open up the pom pom maker and wrap the yarn around one half until there is no dip in the centre. Move over to the other side without cutting the yarn and repeat.

Step 2: Close the pom pom maker and cut the yarn in the centre on each side with a small pair of scissors.

Step 3: Loop a length of thread around the centre of the pom pom, pulling tightly into a knot to secure.

Step 4: Pull off the pom pom maker to reveal your pom pom.

Step 5: Trim the pom pom into a more uniform, spherical shape.
