The best PBY-5A Catalina in 1/72
A model that I've built previously, so that's the photo. This kit is used by other model companies, which speaks about its quality.
A great value price, sweetened further with the hobbycraft Club card birthday gift.
A very easy kit to build, requiring no filling. Superb surface detail, with recessed panel lines. Faithful depiction of fabric surfaced rear portion of the wing.
Now to the detractions, and I'm being VERY picky.
The engines are undersize, and missing their cooling gills.
Observation blister framing is inaccurate, and only permits closed.
Some ambiguity about early and late versions on the instructions, with no explanation. B64 on the box art as a late Catalina, is the only paint option in the instructions, as an early Catalina. I'll be finding other decals, to build in another scheme.
Not mentioned in the instructions. This kit is a tailsitter, requiring a lot of nose ballast to sit correctly on its undercarriage. Or as in my photo, a tail prop.
Enjoy your 1/72 Catalina, I certainly will.
