Celebrating Hobby Heroes this Christmas

Christmas is the time for giving, and that’s why we’re celebrating the most selfless crafters this festive season. Meet John, Rej, Julie and Suzie, whose love for making goes hand in hand with spoiling their loved ones, fundraising for causes close to their heart and supporting local communities.

John

Loves crochet and creating handmade gifts

“When I’m crocheting, I can step back. It allows me to let my mind wander without feeling like I’m doing anything.”

John discovered a love of crochet during lockdown, drawn to the feeling of satisfaction he gets from finishing a project. An original member of his school crochet club, he now teaches friends, creates personalised gifts and raises money for charities. He says his love of crafting is all about making others happy.

Rej

Loves baking and the joy it brings to others

“I just love having something come out right and then feeling proud of myself. It sounds a bit corny, but when other people tell me they enjoy what I’ve made for them, it makes me happy too.”

A baker since the age of 13, Rej is often offering to bake for the people in his life. The model guest, he likes to take care of dessert whenever friends are hosting. His most special baking memory was making wedding cakes for two of his friends, but he says gifting his bakes instead of making it a business is how he protects his enjoyment in the kitchen.

Julie

Loves knitting, tapestry and all sorts of embroidery

“I’m just quite happy to do it and help people. That is me.”

A lifelong crafter, having been taught to knit by her mum, Julie uses her craft to give back to the care home that looked after her loved ones. As well as raising nearly £14,000 by knitting owls, hedgehogs and more, she’s also made baby booties for neo-natal units. Though she fundraises through knitting, she insists she still turns to the craft as a way to relax.

Suzie

Loves hosting, decorating and baking for any occasion

“You know when you’re so excited to give a gift? It’s exactly that. Especially when it's a really special occasion. It’s the most heartwarming feeling when you see their face.”

From mood boards to baking for the big day, Suzie shares her love for crafting the perfect occasion with her closest friends. The party planner of her group, she’s never happier than with her ribbons, fabric wrap and double-sided tape. The highlight of her calendar? Christmas! “It’s the one occasion when you're guaranteed to get your loved ones together.”
