How to Sew a Dog Collar with Removable Bow Tie

This is a great weekend project to enjoy making, and then perhaps gifting.

How to make

Step 1

Cut a rectangle that measures 54 x 12cm.

Step 2

Fold in both short ends by 1cm and press.

Step 3

Press the whole piece in half lengthways to get a pressed line. Then fold in both long edges to meet the mid line, press again.

Step 4

Next, fold the whole length in half and pin flat to make one neat strip of fabric.

Step 5

Sew around the whole long rectangle a few millimetres from the edge to keep it flat.

Step 6

Get your D-rings and place two on one end of your collar piece, fold the collar fabric back on itself about 4cm. Pin to secure.

Step 7

Sew this in place with a rectangle and then sew a cross through the centre to create a strong fixture. This will be a little tricky, so go slow.

Step 8

Next cut an 8cm strip of your hook and eye tape. Pin the fluffy side of your tape to the right side of your collar from the non d-ring end. You need to measure from the end of the collar to the following measurements.

Small dog: 31-39cm

Medium dog: 21-29cm

Large dog 6-14cm

Step 9

Sew the tape in place around all sides to your chosen measurements.

Step 10

Next, with the ‘hook’ side of the tape, sew to the end of the collar, again right side up.

Step 11

Slide the velcro end through the D-rings and secure to the hook and loop tape to fit your dog.

Bow tie Step 1

Cut a square measuring 18x18cm (or use the templates provided).

Step 2

Fold in half and pin all edges. Mark stop points with two pins in the long open edge of about 4cm, this will become the gap. Sew all three sides, leaving the gap.

Step 3

Trim all the corners

Step 4

Turn the right way through the gap and press flat.

Step 5

Pin the middle by folding small 1cm concertina folds to create the pinch in the bow. You can secure this with a few small stitches on your machine.

Step 6

Next, create the bow middle by cutting a square measuring 8x8cm (or use the templates provided).

Step 7

Press the whole piece in half to get a pressed line. Then fold in both long edges to meet the mid line, press again.

Step 8

Fold totally in half to create a long strip, press and pin. Sew down the two long edges to secure.

Step 9

Fold this strip in half, right sides together, and pin the open ends, sew across this edge to make a loop.

Step 10

Turn right way around so that the sewn ends are on the inside.

Step 11

Slide the bow through this small loop and position it in the centre. Use a needle and thread to secure in place with a couple of tiny stitches.

Step 12

For the collar loop, cut another rectangle measuring 12x9cm (or use the templates provided).

Step 13

Press the whole piece in half to get a pressed line. Then fold in both long edges to meet the mid line, press again.

Step 14

Fold totally in half to create a long strip, press and pin. Sew down the two long edges to secure. Fold this strip in half, right sides together, and pin the open ends, sew across this edge to make a loop. Turn right way around. (Alternatively, you can put hook and loop tape on both ends to make it fit different collars instead of making a fixed loop.)

Step 15

Place your bow in place on the large loop piece. Use a needle and thread to hand stitch the bow to the loop. Take care to only sew to the front of the collar loop.

Slide the bow along the collar and it's ready for a festive dog walk!
