Boxes have changed - now vastly decreased quality.
I've been buying these Boxes for 2 years now for Laser engraving. However, sadly these boxes have changed from the normal boxes that Hobbycraft has sold previously. I visited the Droitwich store today and could see both the old (superior quality) and the new (basic awful quality) stacked together. The new boxes look suspiciously close to the boxes sold by the works for considerably less money. Please re-consider Hobbycraft. I for one won't be buying any more should you stick with the replacements.

Sadly, price up, quality down.
Over the course of 5 years I have purchased over 1000 of these both online and in-store and I have always been happy with them. Until recently when I saw the new type... Oh dear. These have taken a step backwards, not sure who greenlighted the samples of these from a new factory but the wood, although slightly heavier, is of a horrible, soul-less plywood instead of the aesthetically pleasing paulownia of previous batches. Consider going back to the previous supplier, please.

OK if intending to paint it
Ordered online - if I'd purchased in store I would have tried to find one with a better finish. This is what I have against online ordering as you can't see what you are getting but it did save a trek to the nearest branch which is not very near. Unfortunately there is a small chip on top edge of lid and the side of the lid has been badly filled presumably to disguise a poorly cut section. As I said, I do not live near a branch and given the fact that I intended painting the box anyway I decided to keep it rather than having the bother of returning it - I just wish that quality control was better. The metal fittings are also a bit flimsy. No complaints about the service and delivery time but was unfortunately a bit disappointed with the item finish - hope it will look good once I've worked on it.

It's more than a box!
We've stained this, installed rope handles in the ends and pyrographed the lid. We are filling it with Duplo so it becomes a Big Box of Building Blocks for my young grandson. We've also lined the bottom with rubber so it makes a little less noise when blocks are dropped in!

Great box.
Bought this box to convert into a sewing box for all my embroidery bits and pieces. I completely dismantled the box and covered it and am very pleased with the end result. Have since bought another smaller box to cover for a memory box for my granddaughter. Great boxes which are so adaptable.

Awful quality!
I purchased this item and it arrived with the front catch detached. Clearly not merchantable quality. I contacted Hobbycraft via the online chat who agreed to send a replacement after seeing a photo of the damaged item. The next day the replacement arrived. This one had screws missing from the hinges. Clearly not merchantable quality. I contacted the company via the online chat who agreed to send a replacement. I also made a complaint! Not impressed with the quality of this particular item not with the fact that my boxes were clearly not checked before dispatch.

Good solid box
I have purchased a number of these boxes. I have made them into a variety of different gift boxes for my grandchildren. Each one has been named using the scrabble type tiles and then they are decorated and varnished. Some I have painted flowers onto and others were left plain. I line the boxes with wrapping paper or wallpaper and varnish over that to make it last longer. The boxes have been filled with craft materials, drawing materials or kept as a keepsake box.
They make a lovely original present.

This product is easy to decorate and has a good finish to it.
