Basswood is the best
I have always found that Basswood is best timber for doing my marine model projects, particularly the masts and booms on sailing boats, it is light, but strong, and the grain is nice and straight, better to buy it from Hobbycraft as you can check the quality, have been disappointed when I have bought it online from other suppliers.
