How to Choose the Right Glue

Glue is one of the most important items in any crafter’s kit. Adhesives go a long way to ensuring a durable and successful result, so it’s worth taking the time to choose the right glue for your project.

Some glues, such as PVA and glue guns, are suitable for a wide range of crafting uses, while other glues are more specialised to particular craft types or materials. We’ll introduce the main types of glue available from Hobbycraft and tell you the best reasons to use each one.

PVA Glue

The most versatile adhesive! PVA can be used on a wide range of surfaces: paper, card, fabric, wood, plaster and much more. It's ideal for most basic crafts, and is safe for children. You can also mix it with water to make a sealer for paper mache and other crafts - but be careful how you use it as most types of PVA are not waterproof.

There are several formulations of PVA glue available from Hobbycraft:

School PVA A washable, clear-drying glue which is great for school projects.
Craft PVA A slightly stronger formulation which dries faster –use when you need a firmer bond.
Clear Glue Unlike most PVA, it’s clear even in liquid form.Helpful if you need to see a pattern underneath theglue. It’s also great for making clear slime!
Fabric Glue This version of PVA glue is waterproof once dry. Fabric glue is ideal for sticking together fabrics where the finished product will require washing.
Tacky Glue Our strongest and fastest drying formulation, ideal for more precise craft projects.

Glue Gun

For heavy duty projects: hot melt glue guns and sticks are one of the strongest and most durable gluing methods available. They operate at high temperatures so they require a lot care and concentration to stay safe. Once you've mastered the technique, they give a fast-tack, strong bond that is ideal for heavier objects.
