Abbreviations

Ch – chain

Ch-sp – Chain Space

St – Stitch

St-sp – Stitch Space; space between individual crochet stitches

Dc – double crochet (US sc)

Tc – treble crochet (US dc)

Ss – Slip Stitch

FO – Fasten Off

Yrh – Yarn over hook

Puff st – puff stitch; [Yrh, insert hook into st, yrh, pul] 3 times into same stitch, yrh,

draw through all 7 loops on hook. Secure with sl st.

SP-2 = spike stitch over 2 rows: spike stitch is an elongated crochet stitch. For SP-2, instead of inserting your hook directly into the row below, yarn over and insert the hook into the 2nd row below and complete the stitch.

SP-3 = spike stitch over 3 rows: spike stitch is an elongated crochet stitch. For SP-3, instead of inserting your hook directly into the row below, yarn over and insert the hook into the 3rd row below and complete the stitch.

Crab stitch – Dc from left to right instead of right to left. (vice versa for LH crocheters)

 

Special Techniques:

To create a denser fabric, this bag is made by crocheting into the spaces between stitches using a slightly smaller hook than recommended.

Gauge: 5 st = 1″ linear with a firm, even tension.

Step-1

R1: With yarn A, slipknot and ch 67. Dc into 2nd ch from hook.

Dc into each ch to end. Ch1, turn. (66 st)

R2: Dc into each st sp to end. Ch1, turn.

R3-16: Repeat R2. At end of R16, ch1 but do not turn. (66 st)

R17: This round will edge your work so far.

Rotate work and make (2dc) into st sp created by final R16 dc st.

Dc into next 14 sp.

Step-2

Dc into next 64 sp. Join with ss.

R18: Ch1, dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R19: Join yarn B into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R20 – 22: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss. At end of R22, join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R23: Join yarn A into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R24: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R25: Join yarn C into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R26-27: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss. At end of R27, FO. (164 st)

R28: Join yarn D into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. SP-2, SP-3, SP-2 over next 3 st sp.

R29: Join yarn C into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R30: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R31: Join yarn A into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss

R32: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R33 – 34: With yarn B, repeat R31 – 32. (164 st)

R35 – 36: With yarn A, repeat R31-32. (164 st)

R37 – 38: With yarn E, repeat R31-32. (164 st)

R39: Join yarn F into any st sp. Ch2 and make puff st into same st sp. Ch3. Miss 3 st sp.

Repeat [(puff st, ch3), miss 3 st sp] 40 times to end. Join with ss and FO. (41 st)

Step-4

R40: Join yarn E into any ch-3 sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. (3 SP-2) into same ch-3 sp.

Repeat [(dc, 3 SP-2)] into each ch-3 sp to end. Join with ss. (164 st)

R41: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R42-43: With yarn A, repeat R31-32. (164 st)

R44: Join yarn D into any st sp. Ch3 as 1st tc. Tc into st sp before ch3 just made to make criss-cross.

Miss 1 st sp.

Tc into next st sp.

Tc into missed st sp.

Repeat [miss 1 st sp, tc, tc into missed st sp] to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R45-46: With yarn A, repeat R31-32. (164 st)

R47 – 53: Repeat R37-43 taking care to match up R49 Puff st's.

Step-5

R54: Join yarn B into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R55 – 67: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss. At end of R67, Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R68-77-: Repeat R23-32. (164 st)

R78: Join yarn B into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R79-83: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into st sp to end. Join with ss. At end of R83, join with ss and FO. (164 st)

R84: Join yarn A into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R85: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into each st sp to end. Join with ss.

R86: Ch1. Crab stitch in each st sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (164 st)

Step-6

Finishing:

Sew/weave in ends.

Steamblock if desired.

Push out puff stitches to make sure they pop!

With yarn D make 41 2″ tassels and sew onto bag every 4th st sp of R67.

With yarn needle and yarn A, sew on bag handles.
