How to crochet a colourful cushion
Brighten up your sofa with a colour pop crochet cushion. Hello bold pink and red colour clash! The simple circle‐to‐square blocks have a high contrast tile effect and are quick to hook once you've nailed the colour changes. Stitch 16 squares for both the front and back of the cushion, or make one big granny square for the back for a reversible design. This cushion cover is designed to fit a 40 x 40cm cushion pad.

Using Yarn A (Red), ch4, join with a ss into the 4th ch from the hook to form a ring.
Round 1 Ch3 (counts as tr), 5tr, change to Yarn B (Hot Pink), 6tr, join with a ss in top of beg ch‐3. [12tr]
Round 2 Ch3 (counts as tr), 1tr in same st, 2tr in each of the next 5 sts, change to Yarn A, 2tr in each of the next 6 sts, join with a ss in top of beg ch‐3. [24tr]

Repeat as for Front or crochet a granny square with 18 rounds, alternating between Yarns A
and B for each round.
Arrange the squares for the cushion front in a 4 x 4 formation, using the images as a layout guide or creating your own design with the squares.
Repeat this process for the back if it's also made up of 16 squares.
Once you're happy with the arrangement, begin joining the squares with a double crochet seam on the back of the work. To do this, hold two squares with right sides together and all corners aligned. Using the 4mm crochet hook and Yarn A, 1dc through every pair of dc sts
along one edge, working through the back loop only of the square facing you and the front loop only of the square furthest from you.
If you think of the squares held together as a sandwich, you're working only through the two loops that meet each other in the middle: one loop from one square and one loop from the other. This seam creates a ridge on the back of the work and a smooth finish on the front. Continue joining in this way, working 1dc in each dc along one edge until you reach the corner. At the corner, add in the next two squares with right sides together and work 1dc through one meeting loop of each of the four squares into the second of the 3 corner dc sts. Then continue as before working 1 dc in each dc in the loops described. Join rows of four squares and then join the rows together in the same way, working as described for the corners.
Repeat this process for the cushion back if worked as front.
Once all the squares are joined, you'll work another dc seam to join the front and back of the cushion cover.
Using the 4mm hook and Yarn A, hold the front and back of the cushion cover with wrong
sides together (the right sides facing out). Work 1dc in each aligning pair of stitches, working
through both loops of the front and both loops of the cushion back this time. Continue for
all three sides, working 3dc into each corner st. Insert the cushion pad into the cover and
complete the dc seam, ss into the first dc of the round to finish. Fasten off and weave in
ends using the tapestry needle.
