* Pattern written using UK terminology

Step 1

(Make 34 squares)
Using 'Yarn A' and 6mm hook, make a MC
Rnd 1: 6dc into MC, join with a ss. (6dc)
Rnd 2: Ch1, 2dc in each, join with ss to first dc. Fasten off (12dc)
Rnd 3: Join 'Yarn B' in any st, ch3, working in BLO of each st, 3tr-clst in same st, ch2, *4tr-clst in next st, ch2* 11 times, join with ss to the top of ch3. Fasten off. (12cl)
Rnd 4: Join 'Yarn C' in any ch-sp, [ch3, 2tr, ch2, 3tr] in same ch-sp, *3tr in next ch-sp, 3tr in next ch-sp, [3tr, ch2, 3tr] in next ch-sp* rep 3 more times. Join to ch3 with a ss.

Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

Step 2

Block your squares on a blocking board to help set them as square as possible.
Squares should be roughly 10 x 10cm.

Step 3

Thread 'Yarn C' onto a yarn needle and use mattress stitch to join squares together into the following panels:
Make two 3x1 panels – these are the sides of the bag
Make one 7x4 panel – this is the front, back and bottom of the bag

Step 4

Thread 'Yarn C' onto a yarn needle and use mattress stitch to join the panels together to make up the bag. Refer to the colour coded picture to see which edges need to be joined together.

Step 5

Now add the trim around the top of the bag.

The trim is made by crocheting rows of dc in BLO but you will be joining each row to your granny square as you go along.

Using 6mm hook, join 'Yarn C' into any corner, ch8.
Row 1: Dc in second ch from hook and dc across, skip 1 stitch on the granny square and ss into the next stitch, ch1 and turn (7dc)
Row 2: Working in BLO dc back across the row you just made (not the granny square itself), ch1 and turn (7dc)
Row 3: Working in BLO dc across, skip 1 stitch on the granny square and ss into the next stitch, ch1 and turn (7dc)
Rep row 2-3 all the way around. When you reach each corner, continue making rows in the same way around the corner, but don't skip a stitch when you ss into the granny square.
Once you have made the full trim, join the last row to the starting chain by ss along the row.

Note: The images show the trim being added before joining the panels together, but we recommend adding it afterwards for a neater finish.

Step 6

(Make 2)
Using 'Yarn C' make a chain the same length as the tote bag strap, (about 70ch)

Row 1: Dc in 2nd ch from hook, and then dc across, ch1 and turn. (69dc)
Row 2: In BLO dc across, ch1 and turn. (69dc)
Row 3 - 8: Repeat row 2.
Fasten off.

Note: The straps need to be just wide enough to wrap around the tote bag straps, so you may need to adjust the number of rows accordingly.

Step 7

To attach the straps to the tote bag,you need to join the long sides of the strap together to create a tube around the tote strap.

To do this, take one crocheted strap and wrap it around the tote strap. Attach 'Yarn C' at one end, leaving a long tail. Ss along the long side of the strap, making sure you insert your hook through both the dc from the last row of the strap, and the corresponding ch from the starting chain of the strap.

When you reach the end, fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Repeat for the second strap.

Step 8

Slide the tote bag inside the main part of your crocheted bag. Lay everything flat to ensure it is aligned correctly before joining.

Thread a yarn needle onto one of the long tails left from step 7. Use a mattress stitch to join the end of the strap to the correct place on the main part of the bag. Repeat with the other end of the strap, and then with the second strap.

Weave in all ends.
