Special Techniques:

To create a firmer, denser fabric, these shorts are made by crocheting into the spaces between stitches.

Gauge: 5 st = 1″ linear with a firm, even tension.

Step-1

Make 32 in total…

Square A: 10 x 3mm hook

Square B: 10 x 4mm hook

Square C: 12 x 4.5mm hook

Step-2
R1: With yarn A, magic loop and ch2 as 1st htc. (11 htc) into the loop. Tighten, join with ss and FO. (12 st) R2: Join yarn B into any st sp. Ch2 and make puff st into same st sp. Ch1. Repeat [ puff st, ch1] into each ch-1 sp to end. Join with ss and FO. (12 st)
Step-3
R3: Join yarn C into any st sp. Ch2 as 1st htc. (htc, ch2, 2htc) into same ch-1 sp. Dc into next 2 ch-1 sp. Repeat [ (2htc, ch2, 2htc), 2 dc] 3 times. Join with ss. (24 st)
Step-4
R4: ss into ch-2 sp. Ch2 as 1st htc. (htc, ch2, 2htc) into same ch-2 sp. Htc into next 5 st sp. Repeat [(2htc, ch2, 2htc), 5 htc] 3 times. Join with ss. (36 st)
Step-5
R5: ss into ch-2 sp. Ch2 as 1st htc. (htc, ch2, 2htc) into same ch-2 sp. Htc into next 8 st sp. Repeat [(2htc, ch2, 2htc), 8 htc] 3 times. Join with ss. (48 st)
Step-6
R6: ss into ch-2 sp. Ch2 as 1st htc. (htc, ch2, 2htc) into same ch-2 sp. Htc into next 11 st sp. Repeat [(2htc, ch2, 2htc), 11 htc] 3 times. Join with ss and FO. (60 st)
Step-7
L/XL only: R7: ss into ch-2 sp. Ch2 as 1st htc. (htc, ch2, 2htc) into same ch-2 sp. Htc into next 14 st sp. Repeat [(2htc, ch2, 2htc), 14 htc] 3 times. Join with ss and FO. (72 st)

Step-7
STEP 3: With the two 3×3 panels side-by-side, Insert stitch marker into top LHS ch-2 space and top RHS ch-2 sp of each. Insert another stitch marker into the ch-2 sp of Square C on both pieces.
Step-8
Sew together on WS using invisible join between stitch markers, leaving an open seam between squares C of both sides.
3.-Step-3.jpeg?sw=680&q=85
Step-9
Repeat with remaining two 2×2 panels.
Step-10
STEP 4: You now have 2 pieces of work, one 6×6 and 1 4×4. Insert stitch marker into top and bottom ch-2 sp of each piece on one side. Sew together on WS using invisible join. Repeat on opposite side with the remaining open seam.
4.-Step-4.jpeg?sw=680&q=85
Step-11
STEP 5: The last two C squares will create the legs and gusset of the shorts. These squares will create leg holes by joining the front and back of the work like a little bridge. Use your stitch markers to line up your squares before sewing if you are unsure. (see pic)
Step-12
Start with the LHS. Take 1 square and insert stitch markers into top and bottom LHS ch-2 sp of both the square, and also the top and bottom RHS ch-2 sp of the open seamed square on work.
5.-Step-5.jpeg?sw=680&q=85
Step-13
Sew together between stitch markers WS facing with invisible join. Turn work over and repeat on the back side of the shorts.
Step-14
Repeat on RHS leg with final square.
Step-15
Now join the open top edges of both these squares to form the gusset by sewing WS facing with invisible join.
