Preparing the yarn

Start with one ball of Caron 'Cotton Cakes' and separate the yarn out into its five colours: wind the yarn by hand until you reach a colour change, then cut the yarn and start a new ball – repeat this every time you reach a new colour. The beauty of the Caron Cakes range is that you are guaranteed to have five colours that are a perfect match for each other!

Each cosy uses 3 colours, so choose three for your first hat and call them 'colour 1' 'colour 2' and 'colour 3'.

Step 1

In colour 1:

Rnd 1 Create a magic loop (or chain 3 and join the chain) and make 6 dc into the loop (or the centre of the chained stitches), pull magic loop closed (6)

Rnd 2 Dc in each stitch around (6)

Rnd 3 *dc, inc. Rep from * until end of rnd (9)

Rnd 4 Dc in each stitch around (9)

Rnd 5 *2 dc, inc. Rep from * until end of rnd (12)

Rnd 6 Dc in each stitch around (12)

Rnd 7 *3 dc, inc. Rep from * until end of rnd (15)

Rnd 8 Dc in each stitch around (15)

Fasten off colour 1 and attach colour 2 to any stitch

Step 2

In colour 2:

Rnd 9 Ch1 (does not count as stitch) 4 dc, inc. Rep from * until end of rnd (18)

Rnd 10 Tc in each stitch around (18)

Rnd 11 *fptc, bptc. Rep from * in each post around (18)

Rnd 12 Rep round 11

Fasten off and weave in all ends except the first tail, which is hanging inside the hat from the top.

Step 3

In colour 3:

Using a kitchen fork, wrap your yarn around the prongs 20 times, cut your yarn and hold in place with your finger. Cut another piece of yarn approx. 10cm long, and tightly tie around the centre of the wrapped yarn, through the middle fork prongs. Slide the wrap off the fork, and cut the loops along each side, being careful not to cut the long tie. Fluff the pompom and trim to shape.

Using your crochet hook or a yarn needle, hook the pompom's long tie through the centre of the magic loop at the top of the hat, and tie to the tail left from the magic loop on the inside to secure the pompom.
