Step 1

First take a piece of tracing paper, lay it out onto the jeans pocket and draw around the area you have to work with using a pencil. Now you know how much space you have you can map out the 4 mushrooms you want in your design.

Top Tip: Make them different heights and leaning in different directions. You can make the two smaller ones at the side, oval/round topped so you only see the red area on top of the stalk and on the larger ones you can draw them with the underside visible.

You can map out the grass if you want to, but you can also do that freestyle onto the jeans later. It sometimes helps to visualize the finished drawing so you can put a single gem in some of the areas of the picture to check the sizing of your drawing.

Step 2

Next, move over to your jeans but keep your tracing paper handy.

Grab your fabric marker pencil/ tailor’s chalk and start to draw out the shape of the mushrooms using the paper as a reference. Using this pencil, you'll be able to rub away any mistakes.

Once you’re happy with your layout you can plan out where the grass should go, or move straight to adding your Dotz adhesive.

Step 3

Tuck a piece of paper into the back pocket of the jeans in case any of the adhesive seeps through. Take a palette or small container to pour your Dotz Adhesive into.

Using your medium sized adhesive brush, spread the adhesive across the larger areas of the mushrooms, being careful of the edges. You can use the smaller brush to neaten up the edges if you need to.

Then, draw in some lines using the thin brush to represent blades of grass.

As the adhesive starts to dry, paint back over it with another layer. Finish this with a third layer. As it dries you should still be able to see outlines of where the adhesive is, as a wet looking sheen. If it doesn’t look like that, add another layer.

Once it looks thick enough, let it dry completely for around 30-60 minutes. Please note it should be tacky but not wet.

Step 4

Once you’re ready to start working on your jeans you'll need a few other items.

Take your chosen colours and sprinkle some out of each packet into your application trays. Pick up your trays one at a time, being careful to cover the spout, and gently shake them from side to side to disperse the dots across the trays and turn most of them right side up.

Next, take your pen tool and your wax pot and apply wax to the tip of the pen by peeling back the plastic cover on it and dipping the tip into the wax. Make sure you’ve picked up some of the wax and get rid of any excess you may have around the tip.

Top Tip: As you create the design, you'll need to reapply wax to the tip when it stops gripping the dots.

Step 5

With your pen and your dots ready to go you can start working on applying them to your jeans.

Starting with the mushroom stalk, grab your white dots, take the wax end of the pen and touch the top of a white dot that has its domed side facing upwards, it will pick it up.

Then bring the pen to the edge of the adhesive on the jeans and gently place the dot down. The adhesive will grip the dot and the pen will release it.

Step 6

Following the edge of the stalk, fill in a full strip, being aware of where it stops for other parts of the design, such as blades of grass.

On the next row, indent the dots into the gaps between the previous row for a more neat fit and full coverage. Be aware that the restrictions of the design may not always allow for a perfect fit. We recommend leaving a small gap to help for when the glue cures so don’t place them right up against each other.

Fill in an area being aware of the amount of space left in your design and adjust accordingly.

Step 7

Move onto creating the cup of the mushroom.

Follow the curve line of the top and bring the dots to a point on the bottom edges, then fill towards the middle from these 2 points.

Randomly swap to white dots as you move across the mushroom, placing 1, 3 or 4 dots to vary the size of the mushroom spots. You need to be aware if a blade of grass comes in front or behind the mushroom in the design. If it’s in front you can switch to a green dot tray and fill in the blade of grass making it easier to flesh out your design.

Step 8

Add some orange on the underside of the mushroom caps, as it will help to give definition and depth to the design. This can be filled in the same way as the tops of the mushroom, working along the edges and into the corners first.

Then fill in the centre, meeting up with the end of the stalk.

Blades of grass can be one single line of dots, or a tapered line that’s one dot wide at the tip and 2-3 dots wide at the base. Fill wider blades of grass in the same as other parts of the design, staggering the dots next to each other, being aware of where they change thickness or cross other blades of grass and mushrooms.

Step 9

If you need to stop working on the design before it’s complete, you can cover using your protective film roll. Simply cut from the roll a section large enough to cover the sticky areas of your design and place it down on it.

When you need to continue, the film will simply peel back off the adhesive without damaging it. (Warning. Do not place protective film onto the adhesive after it’s freshly painted onto a surface, wait the 30-60 minutes curing time.)

Once your design is completed, you can go over the dots using the secure roller to make sure all dots are fixed in place and completely stuck down.

After the design is finished, your clothing will need to be hand washed only to protect the dots.
