How To Make

You Will Need
* Sketchpad or Paper
* Sketching Pencils
* Coloured Pencils
* Eraser

Step 1

Draw a potato or jellybean shape for the rough shape of the head using a pencil. Ensure you draw lightly so you can erase any mistakes.

Draw the ears, nose and eyes, drawing basic shapes first before adding in any details.

Step 2

Using coloured pencils, lightly shade over the main areas with the lightest colours. Use Sand for the golden areas and Powder Blue for the dark areas.

Step 3

Using the Black coloured pencil, start building up the layers of fur using soft shading and some fur marks.

For drawing fur, it is important to look at the reference image and draw the fur in the direction it is going in, the correct length and look closely at the texture – is the fur smooth? Or fluffy?

Step 4

Continue to add in more layers of the Black coloured pencil, adding more pressure with each layer. Leave out areas that are lighter to create soft highlights in the fur.

Step 5

Use Sand and then Umber and Almond coloured pencils to build up the iris.

Then use Espresso and then the Black coloured pencil to build up the dark areas and pupil.

Step 6

Use the Black coloured pencil to lightly shade over the whole nose and use more pressure to add darker areas to the nostrils and shaded areas. Take your time to build up the layers.

Use the White coloured pencil and slight pressure to lighten up the area on the top of the nose.

Step 7

Use the Umber, Almond and Espresso coloured pencils to add in fur texture to the golden parts of the dachshund.

Step 8

Use the Powder Blue and Cobalt coloured pencils lightly to create a glaze of colour over the darker areas. Continue to build up the saturation and contrast of colour by adding more layers of the Black coloured pencil in the darker areas and Almond, Umber and Espresso colours in the golden areas.

Step 9

Draw in the whiskers lightly using the Black coloured pencil.
