Step 1

Start by warping your loom. Tie your warp thread (Puppets Eldorado Crochet thread) securely around the first groove at the bottom of the loom using a double knot.

christmassceneweaving_step1.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 2

Loop the warp thread around the groove at the top of the loom opposite where you tied your knot. Continue looping the warp around the next groove along the top and bottom off the loom maintaining a good amount of tension. You don't want the warp threads to be slack. When you have warped the entire loom you can then proceed to continue the process back the other way across the loom. This is called double warping and will create a sturdier weaving. When the loom is double warped secure the warp by tying a secure knot around the bottom of the loom. Both your knots will be in the same position at the bottom of the loom.

Step 3

Cut a long length of KnitCraft Cotton Blend Plain DK in white. Find the middle of the length of yarn and loop it around the first warp string.

christmassceneweaving_step-3.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 4

Complete a twining stitch along all the warp threads. Start by twisting the bottom length over the top length and pulling it under the next warp thread. Now the top length is at the bottom, cross it over the top length and pull in under the next warp thread. Continue this technique until you have reached the last warp thread, you can now complete the twining stitch back the other way so that you have two rows of twining. If there is any length of yarn left over you can do a row or two of tabby weave. This is where you go under and over the warp threads with your yarn. This will create a base for the fringe if the weaving

Step 5

Cut out lengths of the KnitCraft Cotton Blend Plain DK in white. You can do this by wrapping the yarn many times around a book and cutting it at the top. This way your they will be the same length. I used a book that was roughly 30cm making my lengths around 60cm.

christmassceneweaving_step-5.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 6

Use eight to ten strands for each rya knot to create the fringe along all of the warp threads. Find the middle of your yarn and lay it on top of two warp threads, tuck each side of the length of yarn under one of the warp threads. Slide the rya knot warp to the twining and tabby weave and pull the lengths gently to secure.

Step 7

Cut twenty lengths of the Lion Brand Coboo in Silver. These need to be around 40-50cm – remember the lengths will be folded in half to create the rya knots so will be double the length you want the trunk of your tree to be. Tie two rya knots side by side where you wish the centre of your tree to be. Mine was six rya knots in from the right side of my weaving

christmassceneweaving_step-7.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 8

Cut out lengths of KnitCraft Cotton Blend Plain in Light Grey. You want these lengths to be shorter than the ones you cut for the tree trunk. There needs to enough to fill the middle section of the weaving, I tied around twelve rya knots next to the previous two that will be the tree trunk.

christmassceneweaving_step-8.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 9

Add two or three rows of tabby weave. It is important to have tabby weave between the different elements of the weaving to create structure meaning that it will keep its shape once removed from the loom.

christmassceneweaving_step-9.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 10

Cut a long length of Lily Sugar'n Cream in Over Cast. Fold it in half and loop it around the first warp on the left side making sure the lengths are even. Tie a series of rya loops in varying lengths. Do this by making a loop with the lengths of the yarn and pulling the rest of the length around a set of two warp threads like when you tie a rya knot.

Step 11

These rya loops should overlap slightly with the middle set of rya knots. Create the to four rows of rya loops making each rows loops shorter in length.

christmassceneweaving_step-11.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 12

Cut out a length of KnitCraft Return of the Mac in Sage. Loop it around a warp thread where you want the bottom of your tree to start. Tie a row of rya loops that are around 2-3cm long, working from left to right. When you reach the last loop weave the yarn over and under to the start of the loops and and tie another row of rya loops. When you reach the end of the yarn tuck it to the back of the loom and complete two or three rows of tabby weave.

Step 13

You will want to decrease the number of warp threads you use on each side as you tie a row of rya loops. Keep doing this until you create a triangle shape.

Step 14

Next you want to create the shape of the mountain on the other side of the weaving. I have used two techniques within the mountain to create a lot of texture. I have alternated between the three greys previously used.

With both techniques you want to cut a long length of yarn and double it over several times to make it nice and thick. Loop this around the first warp on the left and wrap it over and then under the next two warp threads. Keep doing this backwards and forwards along the next three or four sets of warp threads.

As with the last technique you want to cut a long length of yarn (choose a different grey to what you just used) and double it over several times. Then tie a series of over hand knots along the yarn. Weave this knotted yarn over and under warp threads ensuring the knots lie to the front of the weaving. Tuck any loose ends to the back.

Step 15

Ensure you are putting a row or tabby weave between each row of textures weaving.

christmassceneweaving_step-15.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 16

Continue to alternate these techniques to build up the shape of the mountain. It should be roughly triangular but without the straight edges you created with the tree.

Step 17

Use the knotting technique to create the snowy peak of the mountain using Lion Brand Coboo in White.

christmassceneweaving_step-17.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 18

Cut a long length of KnitCraft Its Only Natural in Cornflower and loop it around a warp thread in between the tree and the mountain. You want to fill this are with tabby weave.

Step 19

To create the snowflakes in the sky cut a 15cm length of Lion Brand Coboo in White, fold it in half and then loop it around two warp threads and tie an over hand knot close to the warp. Cut off any excess.

christmassceneweaving_step-19_1.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 20

Continue to fill the rest of the space with tabby weave and dot snowflakes throughout. Weave up until at least 5cm from the top.

christmassceneweaving_step-20.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 21

Use a wide eyed needle to tuck in the loose ends at the back of the weaving

christmassceneweaving_step-21.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 22

Use thread the same colour as the tree to sew the golden seed beads onto the loops of the tree.

christmassceneweaving_step-22.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 23

Cut each pair of warp threads at the bottom of the weaving and tie securely with a double knot.

christmassceneweaving_step-23.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 24

Don't cut the loops of warp at the top of the weaving. Tie each pair with a secure double knot.

Step 25

Of each tied pair of warp threads tuck one down the back of the weaving using a needle.

christmassceneweaving_step-25.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 26

Loop the remaining warp threads onto a wooden dowel. Tie the ends of a length of yarn to each end of the dowel to hang your weaving from.

christmassceneweaving_step-26.jpg?sw=680&q=85
Step 27

Once hung you can brush the fringe gently with a wide tooth comb and trim as needed.
