Step 1

First, take your black ribbon and wrap it around your hat, leaving a long tail to tie in a bow.

Tip - When cutting the ends of the ribbon, cut it into a 'v' shape to stop them from fraying.

Step 2

Using a pencil, draw out the shapes onto the foam sheets. The pot of gold needs to be on black foam, the buckle on gold foam and the shamrocks on green.

Then, cut them out.

Step 3

This step is optional. Add glitter to foam shapes by coating one side in a thin layer of PVA glue. Sprinkle over the glitter and leave to dry. Once it's dry, tap off any loose glitter.

Tip - Tap off loose glitter onto a folded piece of paper so you can add this back into the pot of glitter and use on future projects!

Step 4

Gather two of each colour pipe cleaners together and lay out in this order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink to form a rainbow.

Lay the rainbow across your hat, starting just under the ribbon band on the right and bending over the top of the hat, secure in place with hot glue.

To make the pipe cleaner twirls, simply wrap a pipe cleaner round your pencil and slide it off. Repeat this for the rest of the pipe cleaners (curl two of each colour). Attach the twirls by gluing them at the base of each colour of the rainbow, behind the ribbon band.

Step 5

Glue the foam pot of gold at the side of the rainbow which is not tucked into the ribbon band. Attach a foam shamrock to the front of the pot. You can add a few smaller shamrocks around the hat for added detail.

Attach the gold buckle by gluing on top of the ribbon band at the front of the hat (you should be able to see the ribbon through the middle of the buckle).

Step 6

Add your gold, we've used yellow buttons, mini pom poms and gold gems! A mixture of these works well.

Glue them onto your hat spilling out of the shamrock pot.

Step 7
Once the glue has dried, your hat is ready for your St Patrick's Day celebrations!
