Fabric in 4 colours of your choice
Matching thread

Step 1

Download the template provided. With your choice of fabrics, cut around your template. You’ll need to cut 2 pieces out to create a flag. For this bunting, I have created 6 flags in total for each colour, which means 12 pieces have been cut with the template. I chose four different fabric colours so that I had a total of 24 flags pieces.

Step 2

Pin two pieces of fabric together and sew along both of the two long edges with a 3/8” seam allowance. Sew all the way towards the end of your pointed tip, so that your stitching crosses over to create a perfect point at the end.

Step 3

Trim your pointed end, just close to the crossed over stitching – this will create a nice smooth tip when it is turned.

Step 4

Using a turning tool/or thin wooden dowel, turn your fabric inside out and push out your pointed end. You can press the seams at this point to create a flat/smoother flag. I have left them un-ironed, as I love the puffy body that not pressing gives the flags.

Step 5

With your top open edge, fold over the raw edge 3/8 and sew shut.

Step 6

Folding over again, with your newly stitched raw edge facing inside, create a passage wide enough for twine or cord to be pulled through. Before stitching closed, with the overhanging corners, trim them off so the passage sits flush with the flag sides.

Step 7

This step is if you want to finish the open seams, you’ve created from trimming the edges. Fold back your fabric, and stitch tightly along the edge. This will mean that it will be easier when threading, though this can be more time consuming when stitching your flags.

Step 8

Fold back over to create the passage and align the cut edges to match. Pin to sew. Sew along the stitching you’ve already created – ensuring you’re leaving a passage wide enough to thread twine through.

Step 9

You’ve finished your flag. Repeat this with as many flags as you like. Once you’ve done all flags, grab ribbon, twine or whichever threading material you’d like, and thread through each flag. The beauty of sewing bunting like this, is that you can replace the flags, swap the colours around and re-purpose the bunting.

Your interchangeable bunting is now complete!
