How to Make Salt Dough Decorations - Recipe & Instructions
Salt dough decorations are such a wonderful sensory craft to do. Salt dough is the perfect material for Christmas decorations, as its beautifully malleable and once hardened in the oven its very durable. It lends itself to cookie cutter shapes and easy printed textures. These geometric salt dough decorations are made simply with a cookie cutter and some masking tape.
If you like a bit more sparkle to your decorations you could try all sorts of different colours and glitter, or hang with metallic threads to make them even more eye catching.

How to make
To make the salt dough you will need:
1 cup of plain flour (roughly 250g)
Half a cup of salt (roughly 125g)
Half a cup of water (125ml)
Preheat the oven to the lowest setting. Pour the salt and flour into a large bowl and mix. Add the water until the mixture comes together into a clean ball
Roll out the dough to your required thickness, (I used 1cm thickness) and then cut out the shapes.
Use the end of a paintbrush to make a hole in the top of the circles. This is where you'll thread the twine through – give the brush a little wiggle to make sure its the right size, because it will swell slightly in the oven.
Place the circles on a baking tray and cook on the lowest setting for 3 hours or until solid. Leave to cool.
To decorate, tear off a piece of masking tape and stick across a small portion of the circle at an angle. Paint the area and then peel off the masking tape and leave to dry. Repeat with another section of the circle layering the tape over the previously painted section. Remove tape and leave to dry.
Paint over the circle with varnish and leave to dry.
Thread a piece of twine through the hole in the circle and then tie the ends together to finish.
