* Pom pom trim available in store

Step 1
Cut 4 pieces of the cream cotton fabric 70cm x 54cm. Cut 2 strips of the red Christmas fabric 10cm wide.

Step 2

Download the templates below and trace the letters and motifs you require.

Alphabet Template Download.pdf

Create one template of the whole name so you can line up the letters before you trace it onto the fabric. You can reduce or enlarge the template depending on the length of the name you are punching. Place one cut piece of cream fabric on top of your template and trace the design using the fabric marker.

Step 3
Thread the narrow-holed punch needle by passing the wire end of the threader through the outside hole in the tip of the needle and down the shaft until the wire sticks out at the base. Thread the yarn through the threader and using the white tab, pull the yarn up through the shaft and the hole in the tip of the needle. Ensure you have a yarn tail of about 10cm from the tip of the needle.
Step 4
Stretch part of the fabric in the 9” part of the gripper hoop, ensuring it is ‘drum tight’.

Step 5
You will be punching from the back to create looped stitches on the front. Hold the needle as you would a pen. For the first stitch, push the needle all the way into the fabric leaving the yarn tail on this side.

Step 6
For the subsequent stitches, bring the needle up and out slightly, then glide it across to create a short stitch, before pushing the needle back in. Repeat this process to fill the spaces. To change direction, keep the needle in the fabric and turn it in the direction you wish to carry on punching. Ensure your stitches are consistent and your yarn is running freely.

Step 7
When you have finished a section, gently pull some yarn through the needle from the looped side. Pull your needle out of the fabric on the back until the final stitch of that section is flush with the rest. Snip the yarn so you now have 2 yarn tails on the back (flat stitched) side.
Step 8
As you finish a section, reposition the hoop to another section until all pieces have been punched. Press the fabric and punched sections on the back.

Step 9
Trim any long yarn tails on the back. Apply a layer of PVA glue to the back of each punched piece.

Step 10
Fold over and press 2cm along the top edge of each of the Christmas fabric strips.

Step 11
Lay the red fabric on top of the cream (with the punched side facing the right way) so both of the lower edges match. Sandwich the green pom pom trim between the 2 fabrics. Pin, tack and sew the 3 layers close to the edge. Repeat with the back piece of the sack.
Step 12
Place the lining right sides together and the outer, right sides together. Sew around the 2 long sides and the base, leaving a 15cm gap 30cm from the top of one of the long sides on both pieces. Turn the lining the right way out and place it inside the outer layer, ensuring the 15cm gaps match. The right sides of the outer and lining should now be facing each other.

Step 13
Pull the lining layer followed by the outer layer out of the side gap so both sides are right side out. Make and attach a pom pom to the hat. Press both openings and either, slip stitch, or machine stitch close to the edge, to close the gaps.

Step 14
Push the lining back into the sack and press the top edge of the bag. Finish it off with a topstitch.
Step 15
Mark a line 6.5cm away from the top all the way round. Then mark another line 2cm below that. This creates the casing for the ribbon. Sew along both lines backstitching a few times at the side seams.

Step 16
Unpick the stitches on the outer layer between the casing lines on both sides.

Step 17
Cut two, 128cm lengths of green ribbon. Attach a safety pin to one end and starting at one of the gaps in the casing, pass it all the way round, front and back until you reach your starting point. Repeat with the other ribbon, starting at the opposite side. Stitch the ribbon ends together.

Step 18
Attach pom poms to the Christmas trees and a tassel at the drawstring.
